There are many different types of oral surgery that you may undergo to fix orally related medical problems or to fix aesthetic issues. One of the many types of surgery that you may undergo is maxillofacial surgery.

Maxillofacial surgery primarily deals with issues concerning the mouth, jaw, and neck. It is a specialized area of dentistry that focuses on complicated problems in these areas.

To specialize in this area, a dentist must undergo a certain amount of schooling and gain a certain amount of experience before they can become an expert. At the very least, these dentists must attend dental school and go through a residency which focuses on maxillofacial surgery.

The reason that this area is so specialized is that there are many important nerves that run through this area of the face which can be easily damaged during a maxillofacial surgery procedure if the dentist does not know what he or she is doing. The residency and training sections of education that a dentist must undergo can take several years before he or she is ready to take and pass the medical board exams.

This exam is designed to ensure that each dentist knows what he or she is doing and that he or she will follow the correct procedures. It also provides a certain amount of reassurance to those who will be going to this dentist for help as they will know that this dentist can properly take care of them.

Patients must generally find a maxillofacial surgeon to help them if they are dealing with problems that cannot be fixed through normal orthodontic work or dental processes. For example, one of the things that maxillofacial surgeon may do is remove wisdom teeth that are severely impacted.

He or she may also help relieve facial pain. This surgeon can also fix overbites or other jaw deformities that cause a person to bite incorrectly or to smile oddly.

This kind of surgery is often undergone when someone has been in a major car accident in which their chin or jaw area was impacted. As a result, these surgeons not only deal with oral medical issues, but they must have an extensive knowledge of reconstructive surgery as well.

This knowledge allows him or her to reconstruct areas of the face when needed. These surgeons are not plastic surgeons even though they can help fix cosmetic issues.

They do not simply fix how a person looks after they were in a major accident, but they help fix the nerves and other underlying tissues that may have been damaged during the accident as well. This is critical as it can make the different between whether or not a person can use his or her face properly after it has healed.

When nerves have been damaged, it is critical that the patient be treated as quickly as possible as it can make a tremendous difference in how much of the tissue can be repaired and how close to normal that are of the face will be after it is allowed to heal.

Maxillofacial surgeons also have some knowledge of various cancers and how to treat them as cancerous cells and tumors can occasionally develop in this region of the face or body. Often, cancer specialists will work closely with maxillofacial surgeons to fight the cancer and to determine what would be best for the patient as far as treatment is concerned.

If it is determined that the cancer needs to be removed, the maxillofacial surgeon often plays a big role in helping the cancer specialist make sure the cancer is removed without damaging any of the nerves found in this area. Some maxillofacial surgeons decide to specialize in cancer treatment because the demand is actually quite high.

Many cancer patients prefer maxillofacial surgeons rather than cancer specialists when it comes to cancer removal in this area because the surgeon can help rebuild to face so that it does not look odd following surgery. Another group of people that these surgeons often work with are those who are born with deformities or defects.

These deformities and defects can often be removed through maxillofacial surgery. Sometimes these surgeons will volunteer reconstructive services for those who cannot afford the surgery, but for whom it would make a tremendous impact in their lives.

The face is a very important part of a person and many people will not work with those who have deformities. When these deformities are removed, the previously deformed people often have many more job related and other opportunities open up to them.
