STD testing can be conducted on anyone who believes they have been exposed to a sexual transmitted disease. This test may be ordered by a physician, or requested by the patient. Under some circumstances community clinics may perform certain STD tests free of charge. This may be a HIV test, or some other type of testing.

Both men and women should also be tested especially if they have more than one partner, or if they are bisexual. Other signs include unusual discharge from the vagina or from the penis. In women, a vaginal discharge followed by a fever may indicate PID (pelvic inflammatory disease).
STD screening is performed on women who may be at risk of developing cervical cancer. Screening can expose these risks, infections and other diseases that may not otherwise come to the surface. These diseases usually mask themselves by hiding under the surface.
However, with the proper testing, and screening procedures any disease can be treated. Untreated Sexual diseases can lead to deadly health problems, blindness and even death. Syphilis is one of these deadly diseases that are dangerous to the unborn fetus and causes blindness as the baby travels through the birth carnal. Being tested early can also prevent most birth defects.
