Training for the Events of Track and Field

Track and field athletes can participate in a number of events. Long jump events require an athlete to run a short distance and then jump as far as they can.

Such an activity requires a certain amount of training and practice. Only by using the proper form will an athlete gain the maximum distance from his jump.

A standing long jump is similar in nature. However, the athlete does not run prior to jumping.

The purpose of this event is to determine how far the individual can jump by the power of his own legs. The distances reached in this event are understandably shorter than those obtained by running long jumpers.

Yet another iteration of the long jump is the triple jump. Contestants in this event must hop, step, and then jump as far as they can.

All of these events require a person to tone those muscles that allow him to jump his farthest. Other jumping events involve leaping over poles that are set parallel to the ground.

The high jump entails running at the pole in a diagonal fashion, resulting in the contestant jumping backwards over the pole. The person then lands on his back on mats placed below the pole.

Another jumping event is the pole vault. A long pole is carried by each individual participant as he runs toward the jumping area.

The pole is pushed down into a specially designed socket in the ground. Using the pole as a lever, the athlete then launches himself up and over the pole.

Similarly to the high jump, mats are also used in the pole vault to cushion the fall of the athlete. In either event, if the athlete knocks the pole down, his jump does not count.

In addition to the jumping events, there are several throwing events in the field portion of track and field. One object that is thrown is a disc, and the event is appropriately called the discus.

In another event, a weighted ball is launched by the participants. This event is called the shot put.

A ball attached to a short wire or stick, called a hammer, is also thrown. All three of these events require the thrower to stand inside of a marked circle while throwing the object.

Another throwing event that does not require the thrower to stand inside a circle is the javelin throw. A javelin is a long pole that is pointed on both ends.

When the javelin is thrown, it sails through the air until it sticks into the ground. In each of these throwing events, the distance from the thrower to the final resting place of the object is measured.

One can imagine that such events require a great deal of skill to perform adequately. Practice and training are vital to be able to throw the farthest.

Athletes participating in these events should be prepared to train on gym equipment, increasing their muscle strength. Improvement can be made by using weight machines but also by using treadmills and other toning equipment.

Perhaps the most widely known events that are part of track and field are the track events. All of these events involve running to some degree.

There are distance events which entail running for a half of a mile, a mile, or more. Athletes who participate in these events have trained in order to improve their strength and their stamina.

Treadmills, exercise bikes, and elliptical machines all help to improve an athlete's endurance. Other events focus more on speed than on endurance.

Sprints require a great deal of strength to ensure that one is able to run quickly. Training is also beneficial to sprinters, allowing them to improve their technique and enhance their speed.

Another event, known as the hurdles, requires the athletes who participate to run around a track, occasionally jumping over obstacles called hurdles. Not only must hurdlers prepare to run fast by improving their strength and stamina, but they must also be trained to jump while running.

One other event that is often part of track and field games is the relay. These races may go on for short or long distances.

A runner will start off running with a baton. After he has run a certain distance, he passes the baton on to another runner on his team.

The pattern continues until the distance has been completed. All of these events obviously require a great amount of training and conditioning.

Such conditioning can be done at a gym on the various exercise machines that are found there. By doing the right training, athletes can prepare themselves for any of the track and field events.
