Cravings are a common side effect of pregnancy, but there are many different things you can do to alleviate them. One of the things you may want to try is exercising.

One of the most common side effects of pregnancy is food cravings. Food cravings can strike at any moment for any food, but they mostly occur during the first trimester.

The most common cravings that women tend to have include chocolate, ice cream, meat, cheese and other salty foods. While these cravings may seem unhealthy, many doctors tend to believe that the cravings for these foods are nutritionally based even though no studies seem to have been able to prove this fact.

This means that your body is lacking in something that you need to create the baby and your body sends a signal to your brain to eat the kind of food that will replace the stores on the item you are lacking. For example, if you are craving popcorn, your body is probably low on salt due to the increase in blood volume.

However, if you crave oranges, your body may be short on vitamin C. Human bodies are very complicated though and doctors believe that the craving signal sometimes gets mixed up.

For example, if you need vitamin C, the signal may be for something sweet, but the thing your brain will demand is chocolate. This can lead to weight gain that could be unhealthy for you and your unborn child.

Fortunately, there are several ways to combat your unhealthy cravings. The first way that you may want to try is getting some exercise.

Exercise often encourages your body to be healthy and to desire healthier foods. One of the safest forms of exercise for pregnant women is the elliptical.

The elliptical is one of the most effective forms of exercise for losing weight and getting a good cardiovascular workout, but it eliminates the danger of that is presented through treadmills.

Treadmills require you to push yourself off the ground and land again when you run. The jolt of landing can not only hurt your baby, but can damage your feet because of the extra weight landing on them.

The elliptical eliminates this problem by providing pedals that move with your feet. Instead of picking up your feet, the pedals move with them to eliminate the jolt of landing.

Exercising on the elliptical can provide you with numerous benefits in addition to helping you control your weight and your diet. You will also want to consult with your doctor before you begin working out on the elliptical.

Be sure to find out what your limits are in physical exercise so that you do not hurt your baby by working too hard on the elliptical. The second thing you may want to try is eating a good, healthy breakfast.

If you stomach starts out full, it will not feel the need to send signals for various kinds of food as often. Eating a healthy breakfast can prevent many of the cravings you may feel later.

A good breakfast may include things like yogurt, fruit, whole grain breads, orange juice, and so forth. However, if you still have cravings for certain things, try to think about the nutritional value in an item and substitute something that is healthier that contains the same nutritional ingredients as the thing you are craving.

For example, go for a healthy variety of chips when you are craving French fries. Or try yogurt when you want ice cream.

If you must give in to your craving, only eat a little bit and wait for a while. In the moment, the craving can tell you that you should eat the whole pie.

However, in reality one slice of pie would probably satisfy the craving. One slice of pie would not do nearly as much calorie damage as a whole pie.

In combination with a good breakfast, you will want to make sure that you eat small, healthy snacks throughout the day. This will keep your blood sugar at a steady level so that you will not get as hungry.

When you let yourself get hungry, your body will begin sending off signals of cravings. In addition to paying attention to your physical needs, you should pay attention to your emotional needs as well.

Feelings of anxiety, stress, depression and so forth can all lead to self destructive eating habits and self induced cravings. Be sure you can talk to someone regularly and that you can meet these emotional needs so that they are not source of your problem.

Cravings are a normal part of pregnancy. Sometimes it is okay to give into your cravings as long as it is in moderation.
