There are many benefits to walking 10,000 steps a day. One's health improves, risk of disease is lowered, weight is lost, energy increases, even sleep improves by counting steps and shooting for 10,000. It is easy to see that walking is not only great exercise, but something that can help in all aspects of one's life.

If one walks at least 10,000 steps a day, he or she will really reap the benefits. The benefits of walking as a form of exercise include:

- Improved sleep
- Weight loss
- Reduced risk of heart attack
- Reduced risk of some forms of cancer
- Reduced risk of diabetes
- Improved lung function
- Less stress
- Increased energy
- Lower blood pressure
- Lower cholesterol levels
- Improved social circles

It is important to count one's steps, as this is the only way to know whether or not the goal of ten thousand steps is being met. Once a person becomes an avid walker, it is easier and easier to know when this goal has been met and surpassed. Until then, there are exercise gadgets that can be purchased to help one keep track of the steps and distance walked.

The most common and popular electronic device for keeping score of one's steps is the pedometer. A pedometer is a handy device to have when counting one's steps. A pedometer, or step counter is a device senses body motion and is worn throughout the day, so that each step can be counted. At the end of the day, the total number of steps taken is easily readable thus providing one with immediate information on the total activity level for the day.

Pedometers also come in at all price ranges. These devices start out at around $12 and depending on the brand and models can run all the way up to $50 or more. The more expensive pedometers do a variety of things - they track the number of steps taken, they count calories burned, distance traveled, and tell time. The more expensive pedometers can even be calibrated to calculate one's pace, which is handy for those who are trying to burn more calories by power walking.

The benefits of taking up to (or over!) 10,000 steps a day are numerous. It is important for beginning walkers especially to count their steps so that they will more accurately gauge the distance they need to walk on a regular basis to hit their goal and pedometers are the perfect way to count daily steps.
