What's Causing Your Tooth Discoloration?

Even when you try to look your best each day, tooth discoloration can sneak up on you--or, on the other hand, you may have been dissatisfied with the shade of your teeth but haven't considered its root cause.

Whether the change seems sudden or has been a source of embarrassment for ages, understanding the reason for tooth discoloration can alter your approach to dental care and help you take steps toward attaining the dazzling smile you deserve. So let me help you pinpoint the root of unwanted stains.

In today's day and age, when we have such an enlightened view on proper diet, most of us do our best to consume nutritious foods and drinks, but unfortunately, many of these--coffee, wine, apples, potatoes, blueberries, and so on--have a high acid content, which erodes the enamel and tends to leave stains behind.

When you consume these products, make sure that you have a glass or bottle of water handy to erase residue, which will perpetuate the damage. Avoid brushing your teeth immediately afterward, as the abrasive nature of brushing can actually aggravate the problem.

The use of tobacco, whether through smoking or chewing, is a common cause of teeth yellowing or otherwise appearing unhealthy. Quitting the habit will not reverse the stains that have already appeared, but it can prevent others from occurring. Plus, there are a whole host of additional benefits that can come from kicking your smokes to the curb. Regaining and maintaining a blindingly white smile is only one of them.

Frequently unrecognized, many common medications are the culprit! Antibiotics, antihistamines, and high blood pressure medicines are all known to have an undesirable impact on teeth. Never stop taking a prescription drug because of this side effect; instead, talk to your doctor and/or your dentist about your concerns to see if another drug can be substitute or your dosage can be lowered.

Sometimes mere age and normal wear-and-tear erode the enamel enough so that the yellowish color of the dentin underneath is exposed. Take measures to keep this from happening by using a mouthwash that targets and strengthens enamel.

Make sure to use a toothpaste fortified with fluoride to keep cavities and other dental issues at bay. You should check fluoride levels in your tap water, however, because an excess of fluoride exposure can actually stain teeth as well. If you aren't sure how to strike the right balance, talk to your dentist.

Almost any dentist can accurately educate you about your whitening options with your specific concerns. Because some of these factors are beyond our control, it may take some maintenance on your part to keep that dazzling smile, but it will be well worth it. After all, nothing makes an impression quite like a beautiful, shining grin!
