Using an Elliptical Machine to Get in Shape

Running and walking are great ways to get in shape. As with any physical activity, there are a number of benefits.

Exercise makes your heart and lungs healthier. Physical activity is great for those who are trying to lose weight.

The activity alone improves your mood. Most people enjoy running a route around a few blocks or taking a walk in their neighborhood.

In general, walking and running are good for you. There is, however, one negative impact of running.

When running or walking, the joints of the body, especially those in the legs, are under a great deal of stress. The constant pounding against the pavement can damage the joints.

The knees especially soak up much of the force that comes as a result of running. If done in moderation the effect may be lessened, but it is still present.

When this negative side effect came to be understood, a machine was developed that allows an individual to get the exercise of running and walking with far less damage being done to his knees and other joints, and without risk of impact injuries. This device is the elliptical machine.

The elliptical machine is a relatively new invention, having first become available to the public about two decades ago. The device has two pads on which the individual places his or her feet.

These paths are connected to poles which move a circular device when pressed down by the individual's feet. The action is not unlike peddling a bicycle.

There are usually bars with handgrips extending upwards from the foot pedals. These handlebars allow the upper body to become part of the workout.

The inclination of the foot pedals of some models can be changed. Also, some models have the option to go in reverse.

These variations allow the person exercising to determine what kind of work out he wants. There is often an additional feature that changes the resistance of the pedals.

The work out one gets from an elliptical machine is more focused on the cardio-vascular system than the muscular system. The machine does little to work out the muscular system.

Changing the level of resistance on an elliptical machine can either increase or decrease the intensity of the cardio-vascular work out. If a more intense work out is desired, the machine's resistance may be increased.

An elliptical machine is thought to cause more calories to be burned than most other exercise machines. As with running, the body's metabolism is raised and this results in the burning of calories.

The exercise of an elliptical machine is more moderate than that of actually running or using a treadmill. This difference between elliptical machines and treadmills makes for a quieter workout session.

Because your feet never leave the foot pads, there is not the constant pounding sound associated with the treadmill. The only sound heard by your neighbors will be the sound of the machine.

The cost of such machines for home use is far less than that of those machines used in gyms. Elliptical machines in gyms and clubs do, however, have a wider range of possible settings.

A wider range of settings can help in increasing the value of one's workout. With so many possibilities from which to choose, an individual could certainly find the proper speed, inclination, and resistance to get him into better shape.

In order to ensure the best work out possible from your elliptical machine, make sure that you use it properly. Keeping the body properly aligned-your hips, knees, and ankles all in line-will keep your workout from becoming uncomfortable.

Also, if you are a beginner, grasp the handlebars firmly. If you do not hold on, you may fall off and injure yourself.

Over time, as his balance and motor fitness increase, an individual may use the handlebars less frequently. Using the elliptical machine without holding onto the handlebars boosts one's motor fitness.

It is imperative that you be absolutely sure that your balance is sufficient to stay on the machine before discontinuing use of the handlebars. Falling off the machine is hazardous.

If used properly, the elliptical machine increases one's cardio-vascular fitness. It should indeed be a part of anyone's exercise routine.
