Although February is National Wise Health Consumer Month, it is important to be a wise health consumer year-round. Every so often, individuals should take the time to evaluate their routine habits regarding nutrition, health, spending and medications and see where they can make improvements to save money and prevent health problems.

Save on Healthcare Costs
Having insurance is one way to save money. When there is no policy available through work, consider participating in a group plan through the local auto club, senior citizens association or other membership organizations.

For those who don't have health insurance, look for free clinics and free screenings. Local service organizations give free hearing, vision and blood pressure checks. Look in the local newspaper, check out the community cable channel bulletin board or online calendar for events in nearby communities.

When a doctor writes a prescription, ask for free samples, especially if it is a long-term medication. Request generic forms of prescription drugs when available. Ask if there is an over-the-counter drug similar to the prescription medication. It may be less expensive.

Home Health
If someone is concerned about the safety and health of a loved one, they can take an independent living assessment offered by a home care agency to determine if an older parent or someone who is ill needs at home care. Using a home care agency to provide medical and non-medical support may improve a loved one's health and safety while preserving their independence. Many healthcare plans cover this type of support. Studies show that patients at home in a familiar environment have a faster recovery time from surgery or accidents than those who do not.

Keep Track of Personal Health Information
Request a booklet from the family home health care provider or keep detailed records in a spiral notebook. Keep a separate record for each family member. List prescriptions, what they are used for and how long the patient has been taking them. Include the name, address and telephone number for each doctor each individual sees. Describe the type of doctor it is and what specific disease or ailment that healthcare professional covers for the patient. Make note of any allergies, chronic conditions or surgical procedures.

Post a master list of doctors' and emergency healthcare providers' phone numbers in a centrally located place, such as the kitchen. Be sure to note which doctor sees which household members and note the specialty. In case there is a medical emergency, the information should be easily accessible.
