Cosmetic surgery, or plastic surgery, has become common in the last few decades as more and more emphasis has been placed on a persons appearance. Men consider and do have cosmetic surgery but it is women who get much of the attention for getting it. Women feel in todays world that they are expected to look young well into their later years. Men feel the pressure to do the same but are less vocal about it.
Some people choose to have blemishes covered or moles removed. Unsightly wrinkles plague many women and they feel they have no choice if they want to feel good about how they look but to get rid of them. These are face lifts, as they are termed, where the skin around the eyes, cheeks and mouth are tightened and pulled back for a more youthful appearance.
Not all plastic procedures is done for beautification purposes. Some doctors recommend that certain moles be removed and it is imperative for some to have surgical procedures on varicose, or spider, veins. Extreme burn victims need this kind of treatment to reform and reshape the skin that was damaged. Sometimes the surgeon is able to use skin from different parts of the same persons body to repair a damaged area.
Skin grafts were first used in the early 1900s to cover facial deformities. These were crude and unsightly but it was because of these attempts at reshaping damaged parts of the human body that the current knowledge has advanced as far as it has.
In some forms of this procedure, tissue is taken from the patient himself and transferred to a different area of the body. There is also a form where tissue is removed from someone of the same species, another human, or taken from another species, an animal. Once seen as a bad thing in some Asian countries, it is now widely accepted and even children in Japan and China can be seen having eye procedures.
In recent years, with the weight issues becoming a prominent issue with most of the United States, reconstructive surgical procedures, including breast augmentation for men and women alike, plus the reduction and tightening of skin from weight loss, has seen a rise in occurrence.
Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck, firms and reshapes the abdomen. Mammoplasty is reshaping of the breasts and is probably one of the most commonly discussed forms of surgical procedures. There are other types of specific procedures, such as plumping of the lips, reshaping the buttocks, lifting or reshaping the nose, chin and cheeks.
In all forms of cosmetic surgery, there will be some amount of aesthetic work done to cover scars and help heal old wounds. Removing tattoos is one kind of cosmetic surgery and the application of eyelid enhancers or eyeliner is another. The second and third most common surgeries of this type are the nose and lips. With the overwhelming attention given to celebrities who use it to enhance or maintain their appearances, it is no wonder the face is the part of the body given the most attention.
