Questions to Ask Before You Have Breast Augmentation

If you are seriously considering plastic surgery, more specifically breast augmentation, be sure you consider the following questions before you commit to a procedure. As with any surgery, there are inherent risks involved and you need to be prepared with knowledge before you begin. It is wise to consult with several physicians in order to select the one that you feel most comfortable with. Gather the answers to the following questions from each surgeon.

Are you a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon?
This question, and the answer, are paramount. Sure, you could save some money by using a non-certified plastic surgeon, but the results will not be what you want. You could possibly face damages and years of reconstruction, which is not only expensive, but emotional as well. This will mean the money you tried to save in the beginning will be lost to the cost of repair.

May I see Photographs of Your Work?
When looking at before and after pictures, ask for only patients that your doctor has worked with. Also, ask for pictures that were taken years after surgery. You will want to get an idea of how your implants will look years down the road.

What are the pros and cons of silicone vs. saline?
All implants are made up of a silicone envelope, with a filling of some kind--usually saline or silicone gel. Throughout the last several years each device has improved, but both have seen their share or ruptures and faulty workmanship. Be sure to educate yourself clearly and with enough notice to be able to ask any questions to your physician.

Can I talk to former patients?
Although a conversation with any former patient will help, particularly telling would be those patients who have had their implants for more than five years. These references could provide an idea of long term effects and the need to fix or adjust any problems that have arisen over the long term.

How much will it cost?
The average cost of breast augmentation is $4,000-6000. Expect to pay on the higher end for a breast implants Orange County specialist, than say for a breast implants specialist in rural Texas. Your location will make a difference. The continued cost is also something to think about--will you need to have an MRI in the future to check for rupturing or tearing? Will you need to have them adjusted? These are all important questions to ask before you make this commitment.
