As we get into the busy routine of adulthood, with the demands of career and family, there are many things of which we stop taking note--especially our appearance. While we do the best we can to care for our skin, particularly when there is a noticeable problem, we don't always catch the more subtle signs that something is amiss. So does the skin of your face look as healthy as it should? Let's put it to close scrutiny to find out.
In order to examine blemishes closely enough, it would be helpful to have a magnification mirror. They're not my favorite bathroom instruments by any means, but they are useful.
Examine your face and neck for any moles. They frequently go undetected on the sides of the face near the ears, under the chin, and on the nape. If you have spotted any at all, be sure to compare them to the ABCDE criteria, standing for Asymmetry, (irregular) Borders, (varied) Color, Diameter (exceeding 6 mm), and Evolving.
If the blemishes you spot fit more than one of these, be sure to take your concerns to a dermatologist. The mole may need to be biopsied and ultimately removed. This may leave a scar, but believe me, a scar is better than cancer! The scar will most likely fade, and your doctor may be able to recommend a treatment to expedite that process.
Keep your eyes peeled for other signs of sun damage. Freckles are normal, but redness and dark spots are not healthy. A photofacial can help reduce the appearance of unsightly sun damage, stripping years off your overall appearance.
Adult acne is not as uncommon as you might initially think. Except now you also should be concerned about signs of aging as well, so be careful about mixing treatments for both. Again, have a discussion with your dermatologist to find out the right approach to deal with both problems.
If flare-ups are only minor and occasional, however, and have another explanation, such as pregnancy or another temporary hormonal shift, then don't concern yourself excessively. Continue your skincare regime or experiment with other drugstore or department store products until you find a combination that satisfies you.
But if acne-fighting ingredients have never done you much of a favor, then rosacea may be the culprit. An expert will be able to tell the difference. Persistently flaking skin is unsightly and may indicate a problem with eczema, but only mild, occasional flaking could just mean you need a good exfoliation. Make an appointment at a local day spa for a facial.
Do what it takes to care for your skin. You deserve to look your best and shine through a healthy face.
