Dental implants are posts made of titanium that are surgically implanted into the gum and jawbone to support an artificial tooth. They are used as an alternative to traditional false teeth or dentures, to replace lost or removed teeth. The new artificial tooth cannot be fitted until the area around the implant has fully healed. This can take between 3 and 6 months.

You may find that the costs of the procedure to insert titanium posts vary greatly between practitioners and it is definitely worth shopping around to compare prices. You could find price variations of thousands of dollars; there are a number of factors that can contribute to this.

To compare prices, you will need to make an appointment with several practitioners for an examination and a quote. Get the quotes in writing and make sure that everything is covered by the quote. Some of the factors that determine the full cost of this work include the surgery costs, x-rays, anesthesiologist, titanium posts, crowns, follow-up visits and medication. Make sure all these things are listed on the quote and ask if there will be any additional expenses.

Shopping around will produce some discrepancy in costs which can be confusing; this is one reason why you need to know exactly what is covered in each quote you get. Also, the reputation and experience of the individual practitioner comes into play, as well as the location of the offices. A "dentist to the stars" is going to cost you more than the dentist down the road, for example, because they charge a higher fee.

Other factors also have an impact on the cost of dental implants. The different types of implant, used for different reasons, have variable costs; a full size one holds a single tooth while a mini one will act as an anchor for a denture or row of teeth. Different manufacturers now produce the titanium posts and they also charge different prices and some brands could save you money.

As well as the post, an abutment is needed on top of the post to form a base for the artificial tooth. Check that this is included in your quote and ask about a cheaper brand here as well. Will a temporary crown be fitted until the permanent tooth goes in? Is this in the quote? Ask about cheaper brands of temporary crowns.

Some people need reconstruction work done on their jawbone or gums before a titanium post can be inserted. Some examples would be if the bone is soft or brittle, or the jawbone is too narrow to accommodate the post.

Overcrowding of the remaining teeth or gum disease will need to be fixed before the procedure can go ahead. Obviously, any of these things are going to add considerably to the cost.

Some medical insurance policies don't cover dental implants, so you might like to ask about payment options and time payment plans that may be available with each practitioner. Because of the high cost of the procedure, many dentists do offer some type of payment plan. Dental colleges have students who need to learn how to perform various procedures and usually offer services at a reduced rate. While a student would do the work, full supervision is given by a qualified dentist.
