Think about the kind of riding that you are going to be doing. For road riding, look for the lightest, smallest one you can find that can handle your tire pressures.
For riding in a mountain terrain, choose a durable design that can handle impacts from branches, rocks, and other nature things you may come across on your trail. Make sure your device will not be in your way if you have to go over streams while on the trail.
If you like to do any kind of racing, whether in nature on a road, look for a lightweight product that can inflate quickly.
Make sure that you research the different options, and look at different reviews online. There are three ways to measure the overall performance.
You can measure the amount of work it takes to operate, the amount of air it pushes out, and the maximum amount of pressure that can be created within a given tire. The stroke force measures how hard you have to work to operate the device.
In general, the higher the stoke force on the given product, the harder you are going to have to work. You may also see stroke to inflation on the product-this means how much pumping you will have to do-the lower the number, the harder you may have to work, though.
Choosing on that is compatible with your specific bike is also extremely important. Check all mounting hardware and clamp-on fittings to make sure they fit on your frame-every product is different, and not all work across the board.
You do not want one that is going to block any of your lights, or the place where you store your water. These are very important, and blocking them is not a good idea.
It is also a good idea to keep a tire pressure gauge with you every time you are riding. This will help you to monitor your pressure, and make sure everything is okay.
Gauges that are built right into pumping devices go one step further, eliminating the hassle of switching back and forth between the two over and over. Built-in ones will also reduce wear and tear on your arms, and your valve stems.

Getting stranded on a trail is not fun, and very frustrating. The more you do to prepare ahead of time, the better you will be able to enjoy your ride, frustration-free.
