The first key to great makeup is great skin. That seems almost counterintuitive. Aren't I wearing makeup to cover up my flaws?
Well, technically that is a purpose of makeup. Everyone has flaws and makeup can certainly help minimize those. But that doesn't mean that it fixes skin that is poorly taken care of.
You need to make sure your skin is clean. Wash it at least twice a day.
You also need to moisturize. Dry, flaky skin is the bane of makeup's existence. It makes it almost impossible for your makeup to look natural. It looks chunky and cakey. You can find a moisturizer that is best for your skin by going to a makeup counter and explaining what skin type you have.
For example, I have oily skin, and therefore use a special gel moisturizer that is oil free. Nobody's skin is perfect, but everyone should do the best with what they have. Keep your skin nice and clean. Take the best care of it that you can, and then don't worry about how it compares to others.
The second key to great makeup is a great base. The first part of this is getting a color that matches your skin as well as possible. Again, I would suggest that you go to a makeup counter and get assistance from a salesperson.
They work with makeup all day long and are usually pretty accurate at guessing which color matches your skin. They also have samples, however, so if they don't get it 100% perfect by guessing, they can actually see how it looks on your skin.
After you figure out your color, you should decide what kind of coverage you need. You can get anywhere from a tinted moisturizer to a heavy foundation.
A tinted moisturizer you would use if you wanted a really natural look, and didn't have too much you wanted to correct; maybe just get your skin tone to be an even color.
A heavy foundation would be used to really cover up scars, acne, etc. There are many products in between these two options. Try different ones at the makeup counter and see what suits you best.
The third key to great makeup is great eyes. They say that the eyes are the window to the soul, and they can be the most striking part of your face. Highlight them well.
This entails wearing mascara and some eyeliner. You don't need too much eyeliner, in fact, the more you put on the smaller your eyes will seem. That is the opposite effect you're going for. You want your eyes to look big and beautiful!
The final key to great makeup is great color. I'm talking about eye shadow, blush, and lip color. Avoid colors that are too bright or neon colored. I always cringe when I see girls with neon pink blush on their cheeks. They look like they're going to a clown convention!
Choose colors that are subtle and enhance your beauty-not colors that will make people stare. Really, makeup is something that can be mastered. Follow these steps and practice a lot and you will surely have great makeup.
