In Canada, plumbers provide an essential service to businesses and residents. They provide such services as plumbing maintenance inspections, emergency services, installing plumbing systems in homes and businesses, and performing a wide range of repairs for all parts of the plumbing system, including the septic system and drain field. Even when the economy is struggling, plumbers are always in great demand. A career as a plumber is very profitable and requires education from an accredited school as well as special training.

In Canada, the rules and regulations regarding becoming a plumber can vary among the provinces. For that reason it is important to find out the mandated requirements to become a plumber in the province in which you reside. Generally speaking, the following outlines how to become a licensed plumber in Canada:

1.To become a licensed plumber in Canada, you have to get the appropriate certification. To become certified you will have to complete a program from an accredited post secondary school. The plumbing program is generally about four years.

2. Your education will include a certain number of hours of on the job training. The amount of hours will depend on your province's rules and regulations. For instance, in Ontario, on the job training can be 9,000 hours.

3. Once you have completed the plumber's program and the apprenticeship training, you will then submit an application for the Certification of Qualification. You will then be given a temporary certificate. After receiving the temporary certificate, you then have to write and pass a Certification of Qualification exam. Generally, you must achieve a grade of 70% or more to pass the exam. The exam itself entails all pertinent questions regarding plumbing and plumbing systems as well as the appropriate plumbing codes for your province. In Canada, the majority of territories and provinces require that plumbers have their certification. As well, employers tend to want their employees to have this certification. There will be a fee which varies among the provinces.

4. In Canada, plumbers must complete an apprenticeship which is linked to the Apprenticeship Training Standards for Plumbers. Plumbers are required to acquire an employer that will provide the apprenticeship training. The apprenticeship training will involve an employer and employee signing a contract to undergo apprenticeship training. After the apprenticeship training has been completed and certified by the employer, you will be a licensed plumber.

5. There is a way to ensure you can work in other provinces. The Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship offers the Red Seal Plumbing Exam which allows plumbers gain employment in any territory or province without having to go through a re-certification process.

Plumbing is a popular career choice as it is not only lucrative, but it is also a stable career. Plumbers are always in demand, whether for residential or commercial plumbing. As well, plumbers can open up their own franchise or build their own plumbing company. A career in plumbing is a great career that is worth considering for those looking for a high pay and many challenges.
