When you're falling in love with the person who could be "the one," it can be easy to get caught up in the action. Even the most practical individuals don't always think more than one or two steps ahead, but if marriage and family are looming ahead of you, it's so important to focus on adequate preparation for the milestones you hope to hit in the years to come. This advice can guide you in the right direction.

Finances should be one of your main concerns during this period of your life. You and your significant other need to get on the same page as soon as possible. These early years make saving and spending a bit more complicated, as you need to be concerned with allotting money for purchasing a home, paying off debts, saving for retirement, and preparing for your children's education.

You should also consider some unconventional expenses. If you are nearing the end of your fertile years or your family has a history of infertility, but you still hope to bring children into the world, then you may want to designate some of your income to save for IVF or other fertility treatments in case the need arises in the future.

Ideally you will never need to investigate this procedure, but in that event, you can still use the money to pay off medical expenses accrued from OBGYN appointments and the delivery itself.

If necessary, contact a financial professional to help you tweak your budget and cut down on excess expenditures. Getting all your finances in order is conducive to marital harmony and opens doors when the time comes--for vacations, for medical procedures, and more.

Make healthy living a priority, especially if you and your spouse hope to conceive soon. For the safety of your fetus, you absolutely must not smoke, drink, or use drugs during your pregnancy, so it would be wise to completely kick these habits now. Seek additional help if you need it.
Do not stop taking prescription drugs without the permission of your doctor, but do make an appointment with him/her to discuss whether or not you can continue taking your prescriptions after you conceive.

You may be instructed to slowly step down the dosage until you are no longer consuming any at all, and you may suffer from withdrawals, so keep up communication with your healthcare professional.

Having a family is a roller coaster, but with adequate preparation, some of the stress can be taken out of the next major steps of your life. So hold on tight!
