One of the most contracted orally related diseases is gum disease. Fortunately, gum disease can be easily prevented through a number of different home treatments.

Most of these things are encouraged by dentists and other oral care providers universally. The top three things you can do to prevent gum disease is regularly brush your teeth, floss, and use the proper kind of mouth wash.

These things can also prevent gum disease from getting worse. This disease can be contracted by anyone of any age and it will progressively get worse if it is left untreated.

If it is allowed to progress to a serious stage, it can cause the development of other oral health problems. It is critically important to take proper care of your teeth in order to avoid these negative side effects.

Gum disease is also known widely as gingivitis. Some of the side effects of this disease include swelling, bleeding, and sensitivity in the gums.

Bad breath and red gums are also often associated with this condition. These things are all caused by plaque when it is allowed to build up on the teeth.

Plaque is transferred to the teeth when you choose to eat foods that contain a lot of starch or sugar. While other foods can also transfer plaque to the teeth, starches and sugars tend to contain the most of this harmful substance.

When the plaque is allowed to sit on the teeth, it hardens and becomes what is known as tartar. Due to its hardness, tartar is much more difficult to remove than plaque.

It is also much more likely to irritate the gums or cause infection. Brushing your teeth with a soft bristled toothbrush and flossing regularly is the best way to remove plaque and treat or prevent this condition.

However, washing your mouth out with the correct kind of mouthwash can also aid in your oral health. The use of mouthwash, which kills the bacteria in your mouth, can help lower the risk that you are at for developing gum disease.

Some kinds of mouthwash can even protect your teeth from further decay. There are many different types of mouthwash that you can choose from.

You will need to carefully research the different types to find out which one will provide you with the benefits that you need. One of the many kinds of mouthwashes that can help prevent tooth decay are those that contain fluoride.

While fluoride washes can help prevent tooth decay, but they do not guarantee that you will not develop gum disease. Other types of washes can help treat some of the side effects of gingivitis, such as bad breath.

Bad breath is also commonly referred to as halitosis. However, the washes that focus on treated bad breath do not generally provide as much protection to your teeth.

In addition, these washes need to be used an hour after brushing your teeth. Washes that are the most effective in helping reduce the risk of developing gum disease usually contain an ingredient name chlorhexidine.

Chlorhexidine is a germicide. These washes are generally only given to those with prescriptions received from their dentists.

Another thing you will want to watch out for is that some mouthwashes contain quite a bit of alcohol. Some even contain 30 percent alcohol.

As a result, you will want to make sure that you keep your mouthwash out the reach of any children who make be tempted to drink it. To small children, these washes can be poisonous.

You will not want to take any unnecessary risks. When you brush your teeth you should usually make sure that you brush them at least two times a day.

It is best to brush early in the morning and right before you go to bed. If you are helping your children brush their teeth, it is generally easiest to reach all areas of the mouth by standing behind them and having them tip their head back.

It is also very important that you may sure you replace your toothbrush about every three months. This is generally when the bristles start to permanently bend outwards or when the bristles look worn out.

To prevent illness, it is also a good idea to get a new toothbrush after you have had a cold or the flu. Your dentist will be able to direct you in the proper way to brush your teeth in order to prevent gum disease if you are not sure if you are doing it properly.
