You may not believe that the environment in which you live has much impact on your exercise routine--until you move from a suburban or rural area to an urban one (or vice-versa). In my small town, walking and biking trails are abundant, and nature parks with tennis and volleyball courts abound.
But I've come from busy, crowded neighborhoods that are less conducive to outdoor activities, so I know how difficult it can be to get active when you're in a small apartment and surrounded by skyscrapers. That's why I've compiled a few tips to help you step up your routine despite your surroundings.
Often, we have so many conveniences that allow us to skimp on activity, and we should forgo them when possible. For example, if you live in an upper-story apartment, take the stairs rather than relying on the elevator. If you live on the twelfth story, this might not always be a possibility, but then take the stairs down to the ninth floor and the elevator the rest of the way. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, after all.
Do walk when possible. If you have a car and commute often, think about taking the occasional break and opt for public transportation. Walking to the bus stop or subway station can be invigorating and will save you money on gas at the same time, which is particularly valuable with the prices skyrocketing.
But do be safe. Crime can happen anywhere, of course, but carrying pepper spray on your person isn't a bad idea, especially when venturing out at night. Don't be paranoid--just take precautions. Always have your mobile phone fully charged and accessible as well.
Take advantage of the resources in your community. Public fitness centers, club sports, gyms, and specialized classes are frequently available in urban and suburban places. Use the internet to pinpoint how and where to participate in your favorite sports or other exercise routines.
Pilates and yoga are always favorites of mine, as they keep me feeling balanced and toned, so I eagerly searched for Pilates in Midtown and found a center that gave me the individualized attention and fun that I craved in my routine.
Use your weekends wisely. Take Saturday mornings to venture outside the city for some fresh air. Hiking, biking, and playing with my dog are all ways that I get active in more remote, lovely areas. The internet is very useful to finding nearby hiking trails. You may also want to try new activities. I have a plan to try cross-country skiing before the snow vanishes for the season.
So be adventurous! And don't confine yourself to your neighborhood at all times. Be committed to fitness, and you'll always find ways to get your heart pumping.
