There are many health conditions that can complicate a surgery. One of these health conditions is diabetes.

There are several different forms of diabetes, but they can all cause complications during surgery if the surgeon is not forewarned and the diabetic does not properly prepare for the procedure. Of the many things that a diabetic must do to take care of himself or herself, one of the most important things is diet.

Eating the incorrect diet can have a tremendously negative impact on your health if you have diabetes and it can make you feel terrible. One of the worst things to eat as a diabetic is generally sugar because sugar does not help you maintain an even level of blood sugar.

Sugar stimulates the blood sugar to sky rocket and then crash. The condition of diabetes is one in which a person's body has difficulty keeping the blood sugar at a normal level because of abnormal levels of insulin.

In the past, diabetics were advised to avoid sugar of any kind. However, recent studies have found that it is not necessary for diabetics to avoid all sugar.

These studies have found that the number of calories that a person eats has more impact on this condition than sugar does. Despite the constant change in eating guidelines, there are many things a diabetic can do to properly prepare for surgery and feel better through eating better.

The first thing that a diabetic should do in regards to diet is eat more often. It is much easier on the digestion system to eat many small meals throughout the day than three larger meals.

Eating small snacks and meals throughout the day can help your body maintain a steady blood sugar level. In addition, this can help stimulate your metabolism so that your body will use more calories.

In general, it is a good rule to never go longer than four hours without eating a small meal or snack. Of course, you must be wise in choosing the snacks that you consume.

Most snacks should not be larger than 150 calories in size. In addition, these snacks should be healthy items such as fruits, nuts, fresh vegetables, and yogurt.

Try to avoid the cookies, chips, ice cream, and other sugary and unhealthy items as much as possible. As you look for healthy meals and snacks to eat, you should try to incorporate complex carbohydrates into your diet.

Complex carbohydrates are found in whole grains and they provide energy to your body for a much longer period of time than many other foods. In addition, they do not generally give your body a huge sugar rush to deal with, but release the energy over time.

These complex carbohydrates can be found in whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, and many other items. As you try to incorporate more whole grain items into your diet, it is a good idea to try to drop many of the white items in your diet.

Foods such as white bread contain simple or refined carbohydrates instead of complex ones. Simple or refined carbohydrates do not provide energy that will last as long as the complex carbohydrates.

'White' items include white sugar, white bread, and cereals which are made from rice or corn. They are digested very quickly in comparison to other wheat items and they can leave behind a drop in blood sugar, which could cause problems.

In addition, it is generally a good idea to avoid eating prepackaged and processed foods. These foods simply tend to contain more fat, calories, and hydrogenated oils than other foods.

If you have a choice, it is usually always better to prepare your own meals using fresh food, even though it will take longer than throwing a prepackaged meal in the microwave. Another on-the-go temptation is soda.

It is also much better for you if you can avoid soda and other sugar filled drinks completely. Try to replace them with water, skim milk, and unsweetened tea.

In addition, fiber is a good part of a diabetic's diet. Fiber also helps slow down digestion and it can help maintain a steady blood sugar.

Another attribute of fiber is that it helps you feel full even though you may have eaten less of it than other items. Fiber is generally found in vegetables and beans.

Beans are also a great source of protein, which is another element that is a good part of the diabetic's diet. Protein can help you feel full even longer than complex carbohydrates.

However, you will want to try to consume lean forms of protein such as chicken, beans, steak, fish, and nuts. Greasy hamburgers are generally not the best choice because there is a lot more in a greasy hamburger than just protein.
