Losing weight can be one of the toughest challenges in our life. Work and stress of everyday life causes many people to turn to comfort food as a release. Mix this with a slowing metabolism as we age and here we are, wondering how to lose the growing midsection as pain free as possible. There are many diets out there and I am sure some people are successful with them. I find most of these diets much too hard to fit into daily life and schedules. Over the last few years I have spoken with many doctors and nutritionists about losing weight, not overnight but also not over the course of years either. I quizzed them to learn if there were foods that can help me lose weight. To my amazement they all had information on foods that could actually assist in helping the body shed pounds. Some were obvious but others were a complete surprise.
Grapefruit is one that I am sure we all knew was a great fat fighter. In a 2004 study at the Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California, researchers investigated the effect of grapefruit on weight loss and found that eating half a grapefruit before a meal can actually help people drop weight. It is not just grapefruit but citrus fruits in general that promote weight loss. Citrus fruits, like oranges, lemons, grapefruit, tangerines, and limes are foods that promote weight loss as they contain high concentrations of vitamin C, or ascorbic acid. This vitamin is an excellent fat burner. Scripps Clinic researchers found that half a grapefruit before each meal helped dieters to lose between 3.3 and 10 pounds over the course of 12 weeks. Every doctor I spoke with about finding foods that can help me lose weight agreed that citrus fruits were a must if I wanted to burn calories.
A couple of surprises to me were that chicken and turkey are believed to have fat burning qualities as well. I always knew they were staples of every diet but I did not know that they could have a fat burning effect on the body as well. None of the medical professionals I spoke with could explain why they seem to have this effect on the body but they still believed turkey and chicken had these qualities.
In searching for foods that can help me lose weight I was extremely pleased to hear that Red Wine, grapes, cocoa, tea and coffee were also considered to have a positive effect on trying to lose weight. These all contain polyphenols, and they actually can have a negative impact of high-fat foods. Polyphenols can act as a fat blocker for the body. Now obviously these are not the only foods to eat if you plan on starting a diet but they can act as supplements that naturally burn fat and I personally will take any help I can get.
