Dealing with Dental Work Anxiety through Sedation

Most people do not enjoy going to the dentist-there is usually some pain involved, drilling sounds, long periods of time laying on your back with bright lights in your face, and usually a lecture about your poor flossing habits. However, some people experience an actually anxiety that reaches the level of phobia.

This can be especially difficult, because it limits your ability to take care of your mouth. Not going to the dentist regularly can lead to gum disease, bad breath, and worse.

This is why there is an option for those who struggle with this fear. Sedation can be used in many cases to help people obtain the treatment they need, while taking away the experience of the dentist's office.

The idea behind sedation dentistry is that instead of working to tackle your fear, as irrational as it may be, you can simply eliminate it courtesy of a nice dose of your favorite anti-anxiety drugs. If you use them under the direction of a dentist, you will be able to use them safely, without any long-term negative side effects.

If you choose this route, a pill is taken about an hour or two before the appointment, so that by the time you are ready to head out, you will be too relaxed and calm to panic your way into canceling. Since this initial dose is likely to cause extreme tiredness, you will need to ask a friend or family member to drive you to and from the office.

Additional anti-anxiety medication may be taken when you get to the office if you still need more. Your dentist will make that determination based on a number of factors, including how well the initial dose has kicked in and how long the appointment is expected to take-this depends entirely on the procedure.

If you choose this route, the patient retains consciousness throughout the process. The patient is actually not asleep, but rather in an extremely relaxed, sedated state.

They are still able to respond to questions and instructions, though they have little to no recollection of the procedure once it is over. This allows for the procedure to be completed without any of the fear and anxiousness.

Due to this progression in the field of dentistry, fear does not have to cripple the mouths of those with irrational anxiety. You can walk with your head held high, with a clean mouth and a healthy, shining smile.

You do not even have to remember how it got that way. While this may be a great option for patents, some professionals are less than thrilled about it.

They fear that it can cause over-sedation, and that drugs may begin to be abused, and distributed too liberally. The initial dose does not always kick in fast enough, and a second dose is given before the first has a chance to take effect.

This leads to over medication. The patient's vitals should be monitored at all times to ensure that they are remaining safe and healthy.

Sometimes professionals need a little bit of extra training to be able to handle these situations as well. These procedures and processes tend to be more expensive to the patient, and insurance does not always cover the extra cost of drugs.

Talk to your specific insurance company about their policy and coverage, before you elect to have a more expensive procedure of this kind. Weight what will be more important to you in the long run-your comfort, or your budget.

While most dentists will work with you to keep sedation costs to a minimum, remember that you are not only paying for the drugs themselves, but for the cost of patient monitoring throughout the procedure. Consider all of your options, and talk to your dentist about your fears-they may be able to be put to rest through some simple explaining of exactly what is going to take place, and how it will feel.

When it comes down to it, you need to be able to have your teeth and gums cleaned every six months, without exception-this will protect you from painful and costly procedures down the line, to treat more serious problems in your mouth. Talk to your insurance company about coverage today, and take the necessary medications to ensure that you can go through with your oral hygiene exam.
