Improving Muscle Tone on an Elliptical Machine

Many exercise machines are designed to strengthen the cardiovascular system. All exercise equipment is created with the idea of involving the heart and lungs in mind.

Some machines, however, focus more on the strength training aspect of exercise. When you think of a treadmill, an exercise bike, or an elliptical machine, though, you don't often think of how each can strengthen your muscular system.

It may surprise you to learn that an exercise machine can improve more than just your cardiovascular health. If all of the settings on an elliptical machine are used properly they can help you reach your fitness potential.

It is possible to condition the muscular system using an elliptical machine. Development of the muscles is an added benefit to the cardiovascular improvements for which the apparatus is popular.

Becoming accustomed to an elliptical machine and how it works will broaden your ability to use it as a valuable part of your work out. Take the time to learn how to operate the mechanism and utilize each of its settings to your advantage.

It's a good idea to warm up and stretch before engaging in any physical activity and this is also true in regards to an elliptical machine. Whatever your usual routine is for stretching, it should be sufficient.

If you do not have a routine that you usually use to warm up, you might consider doing a few jumping jacks, jogging, or walking at a brisk pace. Just make sure that your heart rate has increased and that your muscles are stretched.

When you are ready to begin your work out, you can select which machine you will use. Most models have poles with handlebars that connect to the foot pedals.

If you want to involve your upper body in your work out, select this type of apparatus. Holding onto these poles will work your arms, shoulders, and back.

To further improve the tone of your legs, you can try turning up the resistance mechanism. More resistance means that your legs will have to work harder to push the pedals down.

You can increase the resistance level over time. As you become stronger you will be able to handle a more intense work out.

Working different muscles in your legs is as easy as changing the direction in which the pedals move. Peddling forwards works the muscles in the back of your legs, but peddling backwards works those in the front.

Some models conveniently diagram the muscle groups on a display and show which ones you are working by using a particular setting. This capability will help you determine how best to use the machine.

One setting might work the muscles in your buttocks, while another will focus on your calves. There are many possibilities for toning various groups.

Working the core group does not require you to use the handlebars. A person who is accustomed to using an elliptical machine can peddle while using the core muscles to balance.

The abdominals and other deeper muscles around the spine make up the core group and provide crucial support for the body. The action of peddling causes the core group to work hard.

Working the core improves posture and prevents potential back problems. Exercising in order to strengthen the core group is part of a balanced routine that maintains the overall fitness of the body.

To most effectively work the core on an elliptical machine, you should stand up straight while peddling. In that case, your core muscles will be responsible for supporting the weight of your body.

Rotate through several different settings in order to be sure that you are working on all possible muscle groups during your session. Having a balanced exercise routine is important to overall health and wellness.

Each of these exercises should first be done at a moderate setting. As is the case with any work out, doing too much can hurt your body rather than help it.

Begin with a comfortable setting that challenges you. You can gradually work up to a tougher setting when you feel that you are no longer challenged by your beginning settings.

Try to find a balance between working your cardiovascular system and your muscular system. You will feel like your best self.
