The cardiovascular system is one of the vital systems of the body. The heart pumps blood, which has been infused with oxygen by the lungs, to all areas of the body.

The system is critical to the overall health of the body because of its role in bringing oxygen to the cells of the body and taking away the toxins which need to be removed. Everyone should be concerned with maintaining the health of their cardiovascular system.

Disease of the cardiovascular system is the leading cause of death in the United States. Decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is as easy as working out.

Those who do not work out put themselves at an increased risk of developing CVD. You could be doubling your risk of developing CVD if you already have high cholesterol or high blood pressure and you are not physically active as well.

Starting to an exercise regimen now can decrease those risk factors. It's a good idea to create an exercise routine that will allow you to get into the an easily maintainable habit of becoming physically fit.

There are some simple exercises you can do to increase your heart health. You can use the stairs in your house or just go for a run if you decide against purchasing an exercise machine.

One way in which you might choose to exercise is to just climb your stairs. The exertion associated with climbing up and down the stairs will strengthen your hear t and lungs, helping them to better perform their job of getting oxygen to the rest of your body.

If you choose to buy an exercise machine to aid you in your quest for cardiovascular fitness you will have some options to choose from. Each of these various options has its own benefits.

An elliptical machine presents a low impact alternative to running. Decreased joint strain is an advantage of using an elliptical machine to work out.

Indoor rowing machines are another option which you might choose. Those who enjoy rowing real watercraft will enjoy the type of exercise available from a rowing machine.

Stair climbing and running are simulated by Stairmasters and treadmills. Exercising with these machines can, however, have a negative effect on your joints, so be careful.

For those who enjoy riding a bike but don't always have the time to take a long ride there is the stationary bike. Like the elliptical machine, the exercise bike offers a low impact work out.

Another way in which you can improve your cardiovascular health from the comfort of your own home is to buy exercise program DVDs. Most programs on the market today are designed to have a cardiovascular element.

The program you enjoy might be kickboxing or it might be P90X, but whatever the program is it should be active and get your heart rate going. That is the only way to be sure that the exercise program you have chosen is helping your heart.

If you would rather exercise outside and enjoy the fresh air you can certainly participate in any number of outdoor activities or sports. As long as you can consistently maintain an elevated heart rate while doing it you should be fine.

Cross country skiing, running, walking, inline-skating, and jogging all benefit the cardiovascular system. Those who prefer a more individualized type of exercise should feel comfortable with any of these activities.

You could also join a pickup football, soccer, or rugby game. The intense physical activity required to play any of these sports is sure to strengthen the cardiovascular system.

There are also some sports and activities, in which you might participate, that can be done either outside or inside. Swimming at the lake or at an indoor pool, or jump roping at the gym or in your driveway both can help you get in shape.

The health of your heart is very important. If you heart is not healthy it can cause serious problems for you and impede your ability to do the things you want to do.

Keeping your heart healthy is simply a matter of exercising every day. Resolve today that you will work out and improve the fitness of your heart.
