Individuals who are obese sometimes undergo radical surgeries that are intended to help them lose weight. Gastric LAP bands are used to close off a portion of the stomach.

The smaller area that is created fills faster, allowing the individual to feel full after eating less food. However, these bands can be manipulated to allow the stomach to increase in size again.

Another type of surgery, called gastric bypass, involves connecting the esophagus almost directly to the small intestine. A small portion of the stomach is left and stitched to the bowels.

The result of this procedure has the same effect as the gastric LAP band, yet it is more lasting because the stomach is actually made physically smaller. In either case, though, the patient must be sure to maintain a good diet after he undergoes the surgery.

When a person decides to undergo bariatric surgery, his plastic surgeon will have to ensure that he is a good candidate for the procedure. In order to qualify for the procedure, the person must actually have a problem that can be fixed by the treatment.

Obviously, then, the person must need to lose weight. Additionally, it must be determined that other methods of weight loss have not given the person the desired results.

Furthermore, the individual should demonstrate the ability to lose a little bit of weight before the surgery. A plastic surgeon will want to be sure that the patient will be able to maintain a healthy diet after the procedure is completed so that the weight will not return.

Once the person has proven that they are able to live a healthy lifestyle, he will be considered for surgery. Medical tests will serve to solidify the person's candidacy for the procedure.

After a person undergoes bariatric surgery, the surgeon will recommend that he ingest a liquid diet during his recovery period. Gastric surgery, like any type of surgery, is invasive and causes some trauma to the area.

Heavier, more substantial foods will cause nausea and other problems for the patient. Once the recovery period is over, however, the patient can begin to consume more significant portions.

The transition from recovery to normal life is extremely crucial to those who are trying to lose weight by radical means. It is important that the person not fall back into his old habits of overeating or unhealthy eating.

If the individual is unable to maintain a new lifestyle, he will most likely gain weight back rather than losing weight. Gaining the weight back will only increase the health risks faced by that person.

To avoid gaining weight back, a person who has undergone bariatric surgery should try to establish a consistent, healthy diet. Should all else fail, he may even try consuming liquids as he did during his recovery period.

A slow change to thicker fluids, and eventually foods, can then be made. The change is crucial to ensuring that the individual consumes enough protein to ensure a continued healing process.

Protein will help the new tissue to grow at the site of the surgery. However, any foods that are consumed should be eaten in the proper portions.

Eating too much is bad, but eating too much of one particular type of food is also bad. Your surgeon should help you to learn what the proper portions are for various kinds of food.

Sometimes it is beneficial to keep a log of everything that you eat. This record will help you to see what foods are problems for you.

In addition, you will be able to tell whether you are needlessly snacking. Some people that overeat do so because they are bored.

Others eat because they are lonely. In any case, the trigger is usually an emotional one.

Most often, the cure is occupying your time with other things. Read a good book or take a walk.

One of the worst problem behaviors is sitting down in front of the television with a bag of chips. Several hours later you may find yourself sitting on the couch with an empty potato chip bag.

Being active is the best way to keep from putting on unwanted pounds. It may be something as simple as walking up and down your stairs, but be sure that you do it.

Losing weight does take will power. Be confident that you can do it and you will reach your goal!
