With the advancements in health care, more and more people are enjoying longer life spans. This means that there will be more elderly citizens in the future years than what we currently have right now. This means that the current infrastructure and system that we have in place to take care of our current elderly may no longer be enough as the years go by. The number of nursing homes, elderly care facilities, and hospice nurses and other facilities and personnel needed to take care of aging people may not be enough in the next decade. This is why both NGOs and government agencies are campaigning and promoting the aging in place initiative as a way of alleviating the growing numbers of the elderly in the country.

At present the popular method for taking care of the elderly is to house them in retirement communities as well as in nursing homes. These facilities are great for taking care of the elderly because everything they need is provided for them by the staff. Many families have prepared to house their elderly in nursing homes because they know that their elderly will be well taken care of by qualified professionals. This is why many people include a nursing home stay in their retirement plans.

The problem with the current system is that it is only able to take in a set number of elderly at a certain period. This means that as the number of elderly increases over the years, there will come a time that the number of nursing homes and elderly care facilities will not be able cater to all the elderly in the country. This is why, while the problem is not yet serious, many agencies and concerned groups are pushing for alternative ways to care for the elderly. These include promoting the possibility of prolonging an elderly person's ability to take care of themselves.

The age in place initiative tries to minimize the number of elderly people who go to nursing homes. The goal of the initiative is to make sure that only the elderly who are incapable of taking care of themselves are the ones who are in nursing homes. The initiative tries to do this by promoting specially designed homes that are easy for elderly people to live on. These specially designed houses are so well designed that an elderly person can live on the house on their own and take only the occasional visitor.

With the aging in place initiative, the demand for the number of nursing homes and elderly care facilities will be lessened. This is because if a house contains everything an elderly person needs to live comfortably, only the occasional visit from a social worker or nurse is going to be needed.
