Three out of four people in this country are overweight and at the current time this trend shows no signs of changing. If it does not change we are headed for increased insurance costs and shortened life spans. Changes in society in the past few decades and poor choices are to blame for this epidemic. But being overweight is not something that you have to accept. It is reversible with education and a lifestyle change.

Here are a few suggestions for healthier living that can lead to weight loss:

1. Eliminate 500 calories a day from your diet. Most people have calories to spare in your diet. This reduction will lead to a weight loss of a pound a week. This may not sound like much, but 50 pounds in a year will do a lot for your total health. By eating 5-9 fruits and vegetables each day will help you eliminate foods high in fat and calories.

2. Do 30 minutes of aerobic exercise five times each week and 20 minutes of strength training 3 times each week. Stretching should also be part of your workout. This is a good start and should be increased with time. People that are of healthy weight make exercise an integral part of their lifestyle.

3. Drink at least 48 ounces of water each day and 60 ounces would be better. Water can help you feel full and stay hydrated. The benefits of water are numerous since the body is made up of mostly water. You can't go wrong with water.

4. Enjoy Life. Being happy is going to go a long way towards helping make smart choices and avoid emotional eating. Do things that you enjoy. Set time aside for you each day. We often get caught up in the day's events that involve career and family and neglect to take time to smell the roses. Putting too much focus on any one area of your life will make you feel overwhelmed and will most likely lead to unhealthy behaviors.

Make your plan for losing weight and getting healthy a simple one. The more complicated a plan of any type is the more difficult it is to achieve these plans. Follow a simple for eating and exercise. Find activities that will strengthen your mind and schedule time for activities that you enjoy. Take time to put yourself first from time to time and the rest will fall into place.
