Abdominal Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck

Failed New Year's resolutions may have you dreaming of other options for whittling your waist. While the familiar tummy tuck may seem attractive, it also carries a hefty price tag and a long list of risks. Abdominal liposuction can often provide great results that eliminate the need for the more dangerous tummy tuck at a fraction of the cost.

By removing the subcutaneous fat (the fat just below the skin), plastic surgeons can trim your waist and reveal abdominal muscles that were previously hidden. Fat that is situated behind the abdominal muscles (intestinal fat) is too dangerous to remove through any form of plastic surgery and can only be gotten rid of by maintaining a healthy diet and exercising. Because it can remove a large portion of the fat in the abdominal area, most patients are happy with the results of this procedure and do not require the more involved tummy tuck and its inherent risks, longer recovery time, and higher cost.

Abdominal liposuction is the most common lipoplasty procedure performed in both male and female patients, although since women tend to have less fibrous fat, the fat is more easily removed in female patients. Prior obesity also makes fat more fibrous and thus more difficult to remove.

The procedure works best when patients have been on a steady diet and exercise regimen for at least six months and continue to follow it after the procedure. In order to maintain safety, no more than fifteen pounds of fat should be removed. It can be performed on patients of any age, although some older patients who have lost the elasticity in their skin can experience skin crinkling afterward. Fat that refuses to budge even when diet and exercise are used or stubborn bulges resulting from Cesarean sections or hysterectomies can be easily rectified.

Patients should not need to consider a tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, unless their abdominal muscles have been severely stretched due to pregnancy or they have loose skin and stretch marks too great for the skin to be able to retract on its own. Even if a tummy tuck is decided to be the best course of action, it is safest to tighten the abdominal muscles and remove the excess skin a few months after the initial fat removal to allow the body time to recover. Often patients decide during this time that they are satisfied with the liposuction alone after all.
