Liposuction is an attractive option for many people, but the decision to get the procedure can seem a lot more complicated when confronted with the many different doctors all touting various procedures for achieving the desired results. Follow these tips to make sure you find a surgeon you are satisfied with.
Choose an ASPS Member Surgeon: This will take care of most of your considerations, because it means he or she will have completed at least five years of training in surgery, with at least two in plastic surgery, and is trained in all plastic surgery procedures. ASPS Member Surgeons are also only allowed to operate in accredited medical facilities, must adhere to a strict code of ethics and fulfill continuing education requirements, and are certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Check additional training: A good surgeon will have training in emergency management of surgical and medical complications. At a minimum, they (and hopefully all their staff) should be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support through the American Heart Association or an equivalent certification through another organization.
Ask for references: Make sure to talk to those who have worked with the surgeon before-whether they are other doctors, former patients, or your friends who may have gone to him or her-in order to get their opinions on the surgeon's reputation. Ask how many lipoplasty procedures they have performed and the number of patients they have had (as the two numbers can be vastly different if each patient has had more than one procedure).
Evaluate safety opinions: Most complications arise when liposuction is performed in large quantities or concurrent with other, unrelated procedures. A safe surgeon will limit not remove more than 4 liters of aspirate (fat and fluid) in a single day or operate on an excessive number of body parts in a single day. Surgeries should be performed at least one month apart if multiple visits are required and should never be done in conjunction with other procedures.
Consider your options: There are multiple tactics for performing liposuction. They all have pros and cons and varying price tags, so it is important to weigh them carefully and choose the best for you. Talking to different doctors about the techniques they specialize in and which they think you would be best suited for will be instrumental in helping you choose which person you ultimately have perform the procedure you desire.
