Anyone who has ever suffered the incredible pain of a migraine knows that it is miserable being in pain for up to three days with no relief and suffering nausea and vomiting along with the headache. These symptoms have caused people to call migraines "sick headaches" in the past.

There are many different causes for migraine headaches. Some have not even been positively identified as of yet. There is, however, a theory that a certain type of personality is more prone to migraines than others.

One particular type of person is prone to push themselves to the point of exhaustion and beyond in an effort to perform their jobs to perfection. This push to achieve perfection is impossible to satisfy, therefore the personality type is prone to buildup stress to a point that causes tension headaches and possibly migraines.

When someone of this personality type pushes himself beyond the point of exhaustion, certain physical changes take place in the body. Blood vessels contract in the head, neck, and shoulders, reducing the amount of blood making to the brain. The blood pressure rises and tension builds.

When the state of exhaustion is recognized and the person tries to relax, the blood vessels dilate and the flow of blood increases all at once. The muscles tighten in the head, neck, and shoulders, leading to pain that may center on one side of the head or the other.

The harder the person pushes his body, the worse the pain will be when he succumbs to his need to rest. Headache pain and nausea will set in and the person may be completely disabled for up to three days.

The good news is that this type of migraine can be treated most effectively by making lifestyle changes and trying to prevent the buildup of tension that can lead to these migraines. If the person will pay attention to the signals being sent by his body, he can stop the process that is leading to a painful climax.

Prevention is the best way to treat this type of stress induced migraine. People who are driven to try and achieve perfection in everything they do are often unable to relax and head off the pain without having to make a conscious effort to catch themselves.

Changes in diet have been identified as one of the best ways to prevent the onset of a migraine. Certain foods have been linked to migraines and identified as causes. Other foods have been acknowledged to cause allergic reactions in some people and possibly trigger migraines in others.

Adding certain herbal supplements to the diet has been shown to aid the body in releasing stress and slowing or preventing the onset of migraine headaches. These herbs help counteract certain stress hormones and enzymes and aid in muscle relaxation.

Migraines are very debilitating headaches that often include nausea and vomiting. They can last for days at a time. One certain personality type is prone to push for perfection and overextend the body's faculties. Prevention is the best known treatment for migraines.
