Weight loss surgery has become common in recent years, but is it something you should consider if you are overweight? Most bariatric surgery facilities will not perform this surgery unless the patient is more than 100 pounds overweight or has serious obesity related health issues, such as; type 2 diabetes or sleep apnea.
This surgery will change your life and there are things that are going to happen that many people don't even consider until shortly before they have this surgery. There may be foods that you will never be able to eat again and then some people will eventually be able to eat the way they ate before. For the latter group of people, the potential for regaining the weight is great if they do not change the way that they live their lives.
Before a person considers gastric bypass surgery, great effort should be put into trying to lose weight through following a healthy diet and exercise. Having your stomach stapled and your intestine moved is not natural. However, with that being said, in most cases it is less dangerous than living morbidly obese for many years. I have seen many people lose the same amount of weight as gastric bypass patients without the use if surgery. It just takes being so tired of your life the way it is that they become willing to go to any length to change it.
For some people weight loss surgery is the correct decision, but you only get one chance at it so you have to be motivated to do what you are told so that you will be successful. Not only should a person become educated on the obvious things, such as; good nutrition and healthy exercise, but what goes on in other areas in your life and how you deal with them is critical.
You have to come to terms with the things in your life that cause stress. Everyone is going experience stress and we do have to learn to manage it without eating over it. But many of us deal with unnecessary stress that we have to learn to avoid or eliminate. Being obese is about more than what you put in your mouth and getting the root of why a person eats compulsively is half the battle of getting healthy.
The decision to have weight loss surgery should not be made without giving it much thought. Many insurance companies require 3 to 6 months of education about the surgery and healthy living habits. This is to ensure that the patient will be successful a losing the weight and keeping it off as well as knowing how their life will change as a result of having this medical procedure.
