Common Misconceptions About STD Testing

The subject of STD testing can seem like taboo to many people. No one likes to think about the subject and it can definitely be hard to face. It's especially hard to face when one isn't sure about what to expect. Most are inclined to think the worst and that is very discouraging. The more that people know about what is involved in an STD test, the more likely they will be to forge ahead and get it taken care of once and for all.

A common misconception about an STD test is that a physical exam is needed. This, of course, is embarrassing and no one looks forward to a physical examination of that nature. Luckily, that is not necessary in many cases. So much can be found out through the blood and the urine. This means that getting testing done would be non-invasive and therefore not as horrible as many are inclined to think.

Something else that many people don't know is that STDs are treatable. That means that if the test comes back positive, there is much that can be done. On the other hand, those who do not take the time to get tested will likely find themselves in a worse position down the road. Also, those who do not know about their sexually transmitted disease could unknowingly spread it to other partners which no one would want to do.

Clearly, the subject is embarrassing. People undoubtedly have concerns about the information being shared with others whom they would not want to know. The fact of the matter is that anywhere that tests for sexually transmitted diseases is required under HIPAA laws to keep the results of any patient confidential. This means that parents or anyone else is not going to be notified under any circumstances.

Another common misconception is that the testing process is time consuming. The fact of the matter is that it can be done all in one day. Many locations that offer STD testing do not even require appointments to be made. In addition to the ability to test quickly, the results can come back just as fast. Some places even have the capability of providing results within the first 24 hours. This means that the angst of waiting will be lessened considerably than what many people tend to expect.

Remember also that not all assumptions or rumors are true. There are often payment plans and free consultations for those who are struggling with positive results. Those who do not ask questions will likely be held back by misconceptions until they face the issue. Be sure to get the facts and get tested to ensure the safety of any future partners.
