As shows promoting plastic surgery are becoming more and more popular on TV, it is no coincidence that rates of teenage plastic surgery procedures have rapidly increased as well. Having procedures done at a young age is becoming more and more popular in today's modern, beauty obsessed society.
While these procedures were originally seen more as ones for an older generation trying to hold on to youth, the recent trends in teenage use go against that previous notion. Changing your look or your appearance is not necessarily a bad thing, but taking it to a surgical level can be extremely dangerous, especially for youth.
About two percent of all procedures performed in the United States are on adolescents. This number continues to grow and grow, especially for those between the ages of thirteen and nineteen-now it has nearly doubled.
Like many adults, you may be wondering, what are these young, still-developing people having done? Unfortunately, youth is a time of great insecurity, comparison, and competition for so many.
Many young people think that they need to look older or more beautiful to be able to fit in, or to be admired by the world. The seeking of approval is a very strong driving force in the impressionable minds of the young.
These children do not have realistic expectations about their bodies and their growth, and cannot understand the lasting effect and impact that these changes will have on them. For this reason, some surgeons will not participate in these operations involving minors.
However, there are many that do, who care only about money. In general, these professionals will sit down with the patient and talk about exactly why they want to do what they are requesting.
This consultation is the time for the surgeon to explain exactly what is involved, and what all of the risks and complications could be. Many hope that this will put any responsibility off of them, and onto the child-however, expecting them to make a mature decision at this point and age is quite unrealistic in most circumstances.
Because this age functions quite irrationally a great portion of the time, this is also the perfect time for eating disorders, and body dysmorphic disorders to take over. This very serious mental illness causes the person to not be able to see their realistic reflection, and view themselves as being hideous or grotesque.
Those who suffer from this problem should never be allowed to undergo radical procedures to alter their body, because they do not have an accurate perception of it in the first place. However, this does drive many teenagers to go under the knife.
They will often pick out and isolate imperfections that are completely normal, and should not be changed. Nobody can even notice these things except for them.
If you are underage and thinking of undergoing plastic surgery, the best thing you can do is to think about it as long as possible. Talk to a trusted doctor who will lay out everything in front of you, and help you to understand the decision that you are making.
You do not want someone who is simply trying to make money. You want someone who will tell what you need, and what you do not.
They are the ones who will best be able to explain what the realistic risks and consequences will be for you as well. You should do as much research as you can on the procedure that you are contemplating.
After all, if you have something done before your body is done developing in that certain area, you could end up having terrible side effects which misshape and deform your body. It can also be very detrimental to your health.
If you are thinking about having a nose job, you need to be sure that your nose is not going to naturally change over the next few years as many do. The same goes for any kind of breast augmentation-if your breasts have not finished forming, having surgery can be quite harmful to their normal development.
You may want to seek counseling regarding your body issue, before seeking out surgery of any kind. Sometimes just being able to change the way you are thinking and your perspective on your body is all you really need.
