Sometimes losing weight and doing what it takes to get healthy can seem very overwhelming. But it does not have to be, if you try to take small steps that will get you headed down the right path. If you are looking at losing 50 to 100 pounds, looking at the big picture would be enough to get anyone down. But if you set your first goal at 5 pounds, that does not seem so insurmountable.
Try taking your steps five pounds at a time and it will seem like you are making progress. Reward yourself (not with food) for each five pounds that you lose. Or set other milestones, such as; five, ten or twenty percent of your body weight. Make a journey out of reaching your goals...one at a time.
You can also set the same goals with your exercise. If you have not exercised regularly in a long time, start out by walking. Let's face it; this is something that most of us do on a daily basis anyway. Set a goal of walking 15 to 20 minutes your first time out. This may take effort a first, but it will get easier. You will add to the number of days that you walk each week as well as the length of time that you walk.
It is important to make strength training and stretching a regular part of your workout. Do not become overwhelmed by doing more than your schedule can handle. If you cannot work everything you planned in your schedule, you may be tempted to not do anything at all. There is so much you can do when it comes to exercise. Do not allow yourself to become bored and do not be afraid to try new things. There is so much out there as far as fitness goes. There is something for everyone.
Once you get the process of losing weight started and you are moving in the right direction, take the time to learn more about good nutrition and things that cause people to over eat. Losing weight is only the first step in being healthy. Once you reach your goal weight that does not mean the journey is over. It is a whole lot easier to live a lifestyle that will allow you to stay at a healthy weight than to gain it back and have to lose it again. It happens. Make your weight loss journey a lifestyle change.
