A dentist is a medical professional who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and care of dental problems. In other words it is a person who practices dentistry. Many people go to the dentist every month. However the reason for going to the dentist varies from one person to the other.

There are many reasons why people make these visits. First of all it is to have their teeth checked up. This can be done on a monthly or annual basis. There are several reasons why one should have their teeth checked. To begin with is so that you can check for any cavities in the teeth. We usually use our mouths to eat all sorts of foods and some of the food particles stick onto our teeth. Some of them are removed when we brush our teeth though some remain especially in the areas where the toothbrush cannot reach.

Therefore these food particles accumulate and form cavities if not checked. So people go to the dentist to have these food particles identified and cleaned using complex dental apparatus. In case there are cavities that are staring to form they get scraped and cleaned before they can grow and cause infection.

Also if the cavity is already big the specialist can fill it using enamel or a non corrosive piece of metal. He or she does this after thorough cleaning of the cavity to ensure that they get rid of the infection before filling the cavity. The filling prevents the cavity from coming into contact with food and drinks that one takes and therefore putting a stop to the infection and enlargement of the cavity.

The teeth might also be chipped. This means that the tooth has broken due to several reasons which include eating hard foods, biting on a stone while eating and also as an injury when one falls down. The tooth specialist can repair this defect by rejoining the chipped tooth.

Sometimes the teeth are usually not well aligned which prevents one from cleaning them properly, cause difficulty when eating and also make one look bad. The dentist prescribes braces for this kind of problem. The braces align the teeth by forcing them to grow in line.

They also go to have their gums checked for any infection or deformity. Sometimes the gum gets infected by bacteria and discolors or produces an awful odor. The specialist identifies this and gives one drugs to treat the problem. The gum can also be loose and in such a case it can be identified and treated too.

Finally the reason for going to the dentist is also so that one can have an x-ray. This is done to check whether there are any defects in the jaws and roots of the teeth in case one had an injury or is having a problem in the jaw. Such problems include aches in the tooth roots or jaw bone joint, dislocation of the jaw bone or if a cavity tooth infection has gone unnoticed and spread to the jaw.
