The process of removing debris from ventilation units used to be done completely by hand. In modern times duct cleaning robotic systems have been created to assist professionals increase the proficiency of such jobs. With the remote control units it is now possible to reach extremely remote areas and clean the smallest areas that were not accessible before.
One of the machines used in this process is a multiple purpose robot that can clean rectangular ventilation ducts. The controls consist of a two joystick control box and a remote controlled lift system that allows the operator to lower or raise the brushes accordingly. The unit also comes equipped with 3 halogen headlamps and 2 cameras that make it easy to see when traversing dark corridors.
In order to provide customers a before and after view of their ducts, an operator uses what is called an inspection robot. This unit is equipped with two cameras one on the front and on the rear that allows the inspector to see in reverse so they exit safely. The base unit comes equipped with a fourteen inch monitor that customers can watch the inspection in real time video.
For smaller ducts a micro inspector model is available and comes equipped with color camera on the front plus a black and white camera on the rear. This model is designed to go into tight areas that normal inspection equipment is unable to traverse. Viewing capabilities include a small LCD screen that is standard and a software program that allows an operator to view from a laptop.
When the ventilation shafts are too small for remote vehicles, a technical camera can be used and is attached to a flexible housing that protects the internal wires. This unit can be used with other tools including whips, skippers and brushes. The head of the unit has a black and white camera with a built in infrared light source and can be pushed through a number of ninety degree angles.
Kitchen extraction ventilation shafts are the cause of many fires, for this reason proper maintenance should always be performed. Since the areas are very hard to reach, this is not the usual case and the areas become covered in grease and other flammable materials. Technology has brought us a new method for cleaning these areas efficiently and that is the dry ice robot.
The dry ice robot is designed to be connected to a compressor which is connected to the dry ice machine. The robot is then placed into the duct and is controlled by a joystick control box or it can be set on auto pilot for long and straight ventilation systems. Attached to the front of the robot is a nozzle that distributes the dry ice which once it hits the grease causes the grease to melt off the walls. On the opposite end a vacuum is connected with a grease filter and sucks the material out to clean the vent.
Since technology has graced us with duct cleaning robotic systems the projects have become a lot easier. Other benefits are seeing in real time how dirty the areas truly are and having them cleaned efficiently the first time. Further advancements in the field will be very cool to see and who knows what will be next.
