Heartburn is a symptom where you can feel pain in your chest and it may be accompanied by sour or acid taste in your throat. One thing that can be alarming with heartburn is that, the chest pain may mimic the chest pain that one can feel when having a heart attack and that can be frightening for the sufferer.

Keep in mind too that there can be a thin line in determining whether the pain you feel in your chest is just heartburn or may be a serious condition that needs emergency treatment. Of course, being well-informed is a key to this situation. Here are important things you might want to learn about heartburn.

What is Heartburn?

The name can be misleading but heartburn is just about your digestive system and not about your heart. When the muscles at the end of your esophagus that control the entry of foods into your stomach can weaken, it can lead to acid traveling back to your esophagus and may cause irritation. When this happens, you may suffer from chest pains, sour taste in the throat and in fact, may cause more serious problems such as inflammation of the esophagus and difficulty in swallowing. In fact, frequent episodes of heartburn can also cause bleeding in the lining of the esophagus and that should be something that you have to watch out for.

Heartburn Remedies at Home

Feeling these signs and symptoms of heartburn can be discomforting and worse, it can also add up to your anxiety of whether you are just experiencing heartburn or you are having a heart attack. Of course, you have to be cautious and not just assume anything about the diagnosis, thus make sure to get diagnosed properly.

If you have been diagnosed with heartburn, you can also find ways to manage your discomfort at home. Indeed, there are simple and natural ways to help you avoid and find relief from the pain and discomfort of heartburn.

Drinking plenty of water for instance can help relieve you from the heartburn and the feel of acid in your throat. In fact, you can practice drinking water 30 minutes before meals to help provide your esophagus with enough lubrication so that the digestive process can go on smoothly without draining water during the digestive process.

Peppermint tea is also one of the heartburn remedies at home that you can try. Aside from that, potato or carrots eaten raw can also be remedies you can find for heartburn. Ginger can also help calm your esophagus when you are having heartburn. You may also chew gum for temporary relief. Chewing can stimulate saliva that helps neutralize the acids in your throat.

Of course, there are simple things to watch out for as well. Tight belts and clothing can also add up to the pressure around your stomach and may contribute to the problem. You may want to make sure that there are no pressures around your waist to help you deal with the discomforts of heartburn.
