Excuses, it seems that everybody has some these days, no matter how you look at it weather its consciously or subconsciously we all have a self-serving bias at work which aims to make us feel better in varying times of rejection or failure.

Think back to when you were forced to achieve something in your life maybe you had planned to get a promotion at work only to find somebody had beaten you to the spot. Your mind immediately turns to questions like how could this happen? I did everything I was supposed to? And still it didn't work out?

I guarantee this situation in some way or another seems familiar, at some point in your life you will have run into a situation where you didn't achieve your goal despite the fact you think you did everything you were supposed to. The reason for this is a biological response that is built in and calms us during times of utter disbelief, its self-serving because it serves as a way to mentally block out the pain of failure and attribute this to something else its infinitely better to think that something is simply out of your control and you did everything you could. Everybody feels that they work hard for what they want in life however your idea of hard work and that of the guy sat next to you can be two completely different things.

We create our own realities and as such we subject ourselves to live in a world directly related to the standards we set for ourselves, so in order to take things to the next level our standards need to be in line with what we are trying to make a reality.

Excuses we make are the by-product of this self-serving attitude and although it may make you feel better immediately after failure and you may get some satisfaction safe in the knowledge you did everything you could. But in reality does this actually help? You still haven't achieved your goal so in the long term what have you achieved?

If we set a goal and then fail to reach this goal then the self-serving bias will glare its ugly head and calm us down while passing our failures onto something outside of our control.

This type of thinking can relate to your training, you will often see yourself comparing your results to that of others around you be it training partners, friends or people in the gym. If you set a goal to reach a certain weight or put on a certain amount of muscle and don't reach this goal in the desired time it's at this point you start hear... my body type doesn't put on muscle easy or it's so much easier for him because he's smaller.

This is your self-serving attitude calming you down and making you feel better, it's true there are advantages to certain body types and some people are genetically gifted but excuses are all too common when it comes to training. The ectomorph talks about how he can't gain weight... The endomorph talks about how he does everything to get lean but can't... Short guys want to look bigger big guys want to be more compact the list goes on all of these are just excuses that make you feel better.

When taking it to the next level in our training efforts, it is important to set the right goals and make sure we follow through with our internal drive and practice consistency in our habits. Not achieving your goals should be met with objectivity don't look at what you did to achieve this look at what you didn't do. Don't hide behind an excuse there is very rarely an occasion where your goal was not met and you did EVERYTHING you could have done.

Some goals aren't realistic such as gaining 20lb of lean mass in 12 weeks yet people will set this goal and then make excuses to justify the failure, its important when setting goals that they are realistic and obtainable small steps that with hard work and the correct approach will become a reality it's only when you stop hiding behind excuses and start striving to reach obtainable goals that you will really take your training to the next level.
Author Resource:- Although a number of weight gainer supplements exist, there are proven products such as BSN True Mass which remain as one of the top sellers on the market and come highly recommended for those seeking to gain weight.
