Becoming a dentist is not an easy task, or an easy profession, but it is a very profitable and rewarding one. If you are interested in joining this noble and important profession, you need to begin your journey right away, to ensure that you will be as prepared as possible for your experiencing in both education, and your profession.
To truly understand how dental school works, we need to start at the beginning. Although the road to gaining the proper education is likely to be different depending on the individual, there are courses that are required and recommended for everyone.
You should start with a college prep course in high school, to ensure that this is truly something that you want to stick with. This will then be followed by specific courses in college to prepare you for your specialized education.
You will then apply to the dental schools of your choice, taking the DAT exam to complete your application, and participate in finals interviews. Going back to the beginning of your journey, you will want to take classes in high school that will help prepare you for a rigorous curriculum in college.
Make sure that you take four years of science, and four years of math. It is also useful to make sure that you have a foreign language under your belt-this can help you to be more employable.
Latin will help to prepare you for understanding the origins of all of the scientific terms that you will need to understand and memorize in time. While Latin may seem like a very impractical language conversationally, it will help you quite a bit in school.
Spanish may also be helpful because countless people speak it, including large numbers who live in inner city areas close to many dental schools. These people may end up being your patients, and learning to communicate with them can help your business quite a bit.
As you finish high school, you will need to take the SAT, getting as high of a score as possible. Make sure that you have at least a 3.0 grade point average, so that you can get into a good college to prepare you for dental school.
Dental schools require that all prospective students take two semesters worth of courses in General Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, General Physics, and all of the labs that come with them. Depending on the school, you may also need to semesters of Calculus.
Make sure that you look at the specific requirements for the specialized schools that you are interested in, so that you are ready when it comes time to apply. There will be many other classes you will need to take-make sure that you take them all.
You will need to choose a major in the sciences to prepare you, including biology, chemistry, physics, or something of this nature. These majors will better prepare you for your later schooling, and will look good on your applications.
Most specialized institutions require at least a 3.0 grade point average or better in the basic sciences to gain admission. If you are close to graduating college, and your GPA is lower than this, you may want to retake some of your science classes until it is higher.
The higher your grades and your DAT score, the better chance you gave of getting into a good graduate school. The better the school you get into, the more hirable you will become.
There are some additional courses that will help to prepare you for a graduate education, thought they may not be required. It is a good idea to take them, so that you can be as successful as possible.
You may want to take anatomy, histology, systems physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, and nutrition to broaden your education. It is also a good idea to have a background in psychology, marketing, pathology, biochemistry, sociology, etc.
Make sure that you work on developing your social skills, so that you better learn to interact with patients, and those you work with. Learning how to deal with different people and their dears will help you to become much more successful in the end.
If you work on taking all of the necessary preparatory classes, focusing on a social education as well as a practical one, you will be able to become a successful professional in this field. The more training and experience you have, the better dentist you will be able to be.
