There are many things you should prepare for as you near delivery. One of the things that you should contemplate is the possibility of having a cesarean section.

As a mother-to-be nears delivery it is very important that she prepare herself to have the energy and nutrition that she needs for a healthy delivery. In addition, it is also important to consider the possibility that she may have to deliver through a cesarean section.

Many mothers expect to deliver in a normal fashion and find themselves overwhelmed when they are rushed into an operating room for a cesarean section. It can be quite nerve wracking if you did not prepare yourself mentally for this possibility.

In addition, it can be inconvenient if you do not prepare for it physically as well. When you are expecting to have a normal delivery, you will probably only pack enough personal items and clothes for two to three days.

However, if you end up having a cesarean section, you will need enough personal items and clothing for at least three to five days. You may want to pack more items in case there are complications or in case the doctor would like you to stay in the hospital longer.

As you select clothing to take, you will want to make sure that it is loose and comfortable. You will also probably want to take into account the fact that you will be breastfeeding, if you plan to breastfeed.

If you undergo a cesarean section, your stomach will probably be quite sore and tight clothing will not ease the pain. Something loose and comfortable will be much more welcome when you are recovering.

Be sure to select items that are soft, have loose elastic, adjustable waistbands, and so forth. You may also want to take extra pairs of warm socks, some sweatshirts, and other warm items in case you find the hospital to be chilly.

Many women also prefer making sure that they have their toothpaste, toothbrush, lotion, brush, makeup, and other hygiene items. It can be quite nice to do your hair and makeup following delivery so that you do not feel like a mess when relatives come to visit you and to see the new little one.

These normal, everyday items can also make you feel much better when you are tired, sore, and emotional following the operation. Besides packing your bag properly for the hospital, you may want to do several other things to prepare yourself for a potential cesarean section.

Your doctor will probably require some tests to be done before you go into delivery. This should definitely be done if you know you are having a cesarean section and if you have a pre-scheduled date for delivery.

These urine and blood tests will help your doctor know whether you have diabetes and other health conditions that could result in complications. If you are preparing ahead of time, you may also get the chance to discuss various anesthesia options with a specialist.

Be sure to ask any questions you have when you meet with the specialist. Getting answers to your concerns can help you prepare for the surgery.

The specialist will be able to tell you which concerns are myths and which ones are based on real risks. Most of the time, you will be asked to avoid eating or drinking anything for eight to twelve hours preceding the surgery.

On the day of your operation, you should have prepared yourself by following all of the doctor's instructions, packing a bag with the needed items, and asking questions so that you will know what to expect and so that you will be prepared mentally. When you arrive at the hospital, you will check in and be taken to the appropriate room and given a hospital gown to change into.

The nurses will probably then take you through some pre-surgery health checks, such as taking your blood pressure. They will also set up an IV so that you will be able to receive the necessary fluids throughout the procedure.

Your anesthesiologist should then come in and review your choice for anesthesia and will talk to you about birth plans. You will probably be asked to sign some consent forms as well.

When everyone is ready, you and your partner will be taken into the birthing or operating room. Different hospitals have different policies on whether or not your partner may be able to stay with you the whole time.

If he is allowed to stay, then he will probably be asked to wear scrubs to maintain the sterility of the room. The anesthetic will then be administered to you and the cesarean section will begin.

Most women choose an anesthesia during which they will not feel pain, but which will let them be aware of their baby's first cries. This type of anesthesia will also allow you to talk to your partner and ask questions from your nurse.

Then, the doctor will show you your baby and then take him or her away for testing while the surgical team finishes helping you. Your partner may be allowed to go with the baby, or he may stay with you at that time.
