Preventing slip and fall accidents in the home is important. Currently in the USA falls account for approximately half the number of accidents which occur in the home. One reason more accidents occur in the home is that we think we are so familiar with it that we do not pay enough attention to what is going on around us.

Accidents can happen in any room within the home. They can happen at any time of day and usually when you least expect it. However there are some simple precautions you can take to lessen the chance of an accident happening.

The kitchen is a prime example of a room where an accident can happen. Starting with the floor, a polished floor may look lovely but can also be slippery. If you have a tendency to walk around with only socks on your feet this could easily lead to you slipping over. It is a good idea to get into the habit of wearing non slip footwear in the kitchen.

Spillages are another cause of many accidents. If anything does spill onto the floor make sure you clean it up immediately. You may then need to wait for the surface to dry before it is safe to walk on.

Stairs are another area where people can be injured. Most people tend to run up and down stairs to fetch things without really looking where they are going. Potential hazards are things like kids toys being left out or loose carpets where you could catch you r feet on the corner. Make sure that your stair carpets are in good repair and that your children tidy away their toys as they go.

Bedrooms are a minefield of slip and fall opportunities. There are often cables across the floor from electrical goods such as TV's or games consoles and these can be easily tripped over. Items are often stored on the top shelves of closets and rather than get a small ladder to reach then people will stretch. This can lead to people losing their balance and falling over.

Make sure all cables and wires are secure and out of the way. If you do keep things on high shelves make sure they are things you do not need regularly and when you do need them retrieve them carefully. In kids rooms make sure toys are put away so they cannot be tripped over.

Bathrooms are another area of the house where slips and falls occur. Bath and shower oils can make surfaces very slippery to take extra care when using them. Make sure bathmats are in good condition and do not have frayed edges which could be tripped over. Make sure any water that spills on the floor is mopped up quickly to prevent anyone from slipping in it.

Whilst the potential for slip and fall accidents in the home is great, it doesn't take much to put in some preventative measures to make your home as safe as possible. Make sure cables and wires are tided away. Floors needs to be clean and free from spills. Any repairs to items should be carried out promptly.
