The Impact of Cheating on your Diet

If we looked at the perfect human diet, whatever that is, we all cheat a little, or for some a lot. The severity of how much you cheat will have an impact, this impact could be within 30 minutes (allergy or sensitivity reaction such as bloating or a headache), within a few days, months, or even 1-20 years. But at some point, somewhere, there is a reprocussion. The more we abuse and cheat now the greater the payback might be in the future. And of course finding a balance with that is essential. A balance that serves you well, allows you to do the things that you want to do, but at the same time optimises your health and weight in the ways you want it to.

When we talk of the reprocussions, we are really talking of the subject that is at the heart of this blog post. Many clients that we work with are their own worst enemy in their failure to succeed. There are only so many times that you can show the horse to water, in this case presenting the client with the solution, for the horse to drink and thus the client in question to reach their end goal. Which is usually, 90% of the time, to be lean, happy, strong and free of any ailement.

So when responses like "oh I only have a beer twice a week, whey protein after the gym and have pizza at the weekend" come in we can only give one response. Initially it's to cringe, but the response is exhausting because the ground we are about to cover has been covered many times already with the client, and the key points stressed time and time again. When someone might be on a strict diet, it is that way for a reason. Not cause we are mean, simply cause you will not reach your perceived goals without doing so.

Take the comment listed as an example. Imagine this individual has an issue with their immune system and is lactose and dairy intolernat (far more common than people would be lead to believe). Among this they are tired but at the same time training for their 1st marathon and wants to lose a lot of weight. Although these foods are not creeping in all the time it is far more than is allowed under the circumstances. Such an individual is likely to have broken the rules of a moderately healthy diet much of the time in the past, and over the years it has bitten back, now in a bad way.

The simple fact is that such a person MUST cut out gluten, dairy and adhere to a better lifestyle pattern if his/her goals are EVER acheivable (unfortunately it's a harse and straight forward reality). Otherwise we are constantly "pissing in the wind". When problems are apparent, such as an intolerance that has lead to an immune dysfunction then it is all or nothing. That is unfortunately the price you have to pay for the previous years of abuse.

In this example the gut needs to repair itself, until which the immune system cannot repair itself, until which the body will not lose weight effectively even with the high running load as this is just compounding the stress on the body even more causing the body to hold on to the weight as a defense mechanism.

It is only when we deconstruct the issue in this way that we see the severity of the issue. So my advice, find that happy balance as soon as possible, because when it comes to the stage where it's all or nothing you will feel like you are restricted to next to nothing. In a strict diet such as the one in question it will mean no beer (cause of the gluten), alcohol (cause of the immune response), gluten, wheat, dairy, grains, pulses or anything processed. Even the occasional perceived "treat" will throw the body off the rails because the problem has got that bad (gut inflammation stays for weeks after just one grain of an inflammatory or problem food).

So find a healthy balance before you send the body in to a long life of restrictive eating because of the damage you have already put your body through. It pays to pay attention now, not when it gets bad.
