Through the process of Continuing Medical Education or CME, persons who work in the various fields of medicine keep up to date with the changes, advances and additions to their respective fields. This process should cover exposure new developments in diagnosing, treating or offering support to patients hence it includes literature, pharmaceuticals and advances in technological equipments. Those engaging in continuing medical education can partake in a number of different activities, such as: Video training, Audio programs, Print publications, Online programs, Live events, or any other of electronic media available

How it works

Initially some medical professionals opt for closely studying top professionals in their field. Other options include grand rounds, discussing relevant papers already published, sharing ideas with peers and discussing their cases. The process basically regularized the concept of continuing studies in the field of medicine. Now, a faculty of experts in their respective areas of medicine develop, review then, deliver the contents in whichever format it sees fit. CME is now regulated and sponsored to ensure quality in the knowledge imparted and quality in the professionals that is geared towards.

Why is CME important?

CME is important because the world of medical science is constantly changing. The characteristics that cause the classification of a disease identified today may change or be added to allowing doctors to recognize and treat cases they may not have been able to detect had the knowledge base not been updated. So too can conditions go undiagnosed if it is seen as a new one, or an old one that was misdiagnosed can be corrected as information emerges.

By continuing to actively study medicine while practicing, doctors are able to improve the care they provide. By networking with each other, they can not only learn for their patients' sakes but also teach for the sake of another doctor's patients. New technologies and drugs are always useful and with an avenue for ensuring that doctors receive this information regardless of where they are located, CME is core component in keeping the pledge to serve the millions persons who walk through the doors of medical facilities daily.

Obligations for physicians

Mandatory CME has been an ongoing debate. The measure has been passed and repeal in some states. How the issue is treated is determined by the state. CME is also mandatory in some states once a license is being renewed. Florida, on the Florida Board of Medicine website, for example has a detailed the courses required for the first to third renewal. So physicians must go through a stage of the process about once every six years.

Even if it is not mandatory, Physicians should still complete CME for their own personal development and for the care of their patients. No medical professional can learn everything there is to know about his or her field so treating the CME as a 'refreshers course' is one way to remain current. It's also a way of knowing where to send patients you cannot help directly because based on the pool of knowledge that is accessible, they can know when a condition is best treated by some-one else even if in previous years it was thought otherwise.
