Many people think that they will automatically have to have their wisdom teeth removed. When your wisdom teeth grow in, you may find that you do not necessarily have to have them removed from your mouth.
First, you want to make sure that you understand what they are and why they grow in. Our ancestors needed these teeth to ensure that they could rip through meat, fruits and nuts to survive in a hunter and gatherer environment.
There are many people that do not understand that over time the human jaw has become smaller. This is why there is often not enough room for these teeth to break through the gums in people's mouth today.
You want to make sure that you take the time to understand if there is room for these teeth in your mouth. There are a lot of people that struggle with the fact that they may be able to leave their wisdom teeth in their mouth.
These last set of molars often come through the gums during the late teens of an individual's life. This period of time, the late teens and early twenties, used to be known as the period of wisdom and this is why those teeth are called the wisdom teeth.
Second, when you have a small jaw you want to make sure that you understand that your wisdom teeth may never come through the gums. They may not grow under the gums but they may also become impacted in your mouth.
When there is not enough space for the tooth to come into your mouth it can be very painful. The tooth may continue to try to push through the gum and this can cause a lot of pain and damage your gums and your other teeth.
As a tooth is trying to push through the gum and there is not room you may be at risk for infection. A cyst can easily form in the sac that surrounds your wisdom tooth and this can be very problematic.
You want to be sure that you are getting your mouth checked often at the dentist. When the dentist x-rays your mouth he will be able to tell if there is room for your wisdom tooth to come in or if it is getting infected.
When your tooth comes in perfectly straight and there is room for it, it may still cause problems. No matter what the situation is, your tooth may still develop an infection as it is breaking through your gums.
If you have had braces, your teeth may be set to be straight without allowing room for more teeth. When these teeth start to come through they may ruin the work that your orthodontist did in your mouth.
You want to make sure that you understand how you are going to deal with your wisdom teeth early. As you are dealing with your wisdom teeth early you will be avoiding many of the problems that may potentially occur.
When you are going to have your wisdom teeth removed you may be able to have your dentist do the job or you may want to go to an oral surgeon. You should be sure that you understand the pros and the cons of each.
As you are taking the time to decide you have to understand that if your tooth is compacted an oral surgeon will have to do the job. When you see an oral surgeon to have your teeth removed you will be put under.
When your dentist does the job you will probably be awake throughout the procedure. They will numb your mouth using shots of Novocain but you will still be coherent as they are removing the teeth from your mouth.
When you start to reach this age it is important that you understand how you are going to have your wisdom teeth removed. Make sure that you take the time that you need to learn how you are going to deal with any potential problems as early as possible.
