In general, recovery time for breast augmentation, whether it is for breast enhancement or breast reduction, is dependent on the individual. Some of the variables that go into the amount of recovery time needed after this surgery include the age of the patient, the specific type of breast augmentation surgery, placement of the implant over or under the muscle, the type of incision used, the size of the implant, and the woman's particular body type. In general, patients with the implant placed over the muscle endure less pain and have shorter recovery times. This is due to the body incurring fewer traumas initially, by avoiding cutting the tissue and the stretching of the muscle. Patients are prescribed at least one week worth of painkillers to alleviate pain symptoms.
It is common for many patients to return to work as soon as a week after their surgery, as long as they do not have a physically strenuous position. However, patients with an incision in the nipple or above the breast crease line will most likely require at least two weeks of time off from work before they can return. Strenuous activity and any lifting, especially over one's head, will not be doctor recommended until at least three weeks post surgery. Any strenuous activity done prior to the timeframe recommended by the plastic surgeon can result in additional damage to the breast, as well as prolong the recovery time.
Breasts are sore, swollen and bruised after surgery. Swelling immediately after surgery is fairly extensive. The swelling will dissipate quickly; however, some degree of breast swelling may be present for up to six months post surgery. There is a great deal of initial bruising. However, approximately 90 percent of this bruising will dissipate rather quickly, usually within two to three weeks after the surgery. Breast pain and soreness usually subside within one week of surgery. If abnormal pain persists, it is highly recommended to contact the plastic surgeon.
After surgery, in addition to taking prescribed pain medication, there are other steps one may take to aid with recovery. Ice packs can be applied to combat the swelling and aid in alleviating some of the discomfort. In addition, wearing a surgical bra will compress breasts and further alleviate swelling. Sleeping in an upright position and avoiding sleeping on one's stomach will also help cut down on the amount of pain a patient endures. Ensure that all prescribed antibiotics and analgesics are taken as directed. Patients who received smooth implants should start massaging their breasts 24 to 48 hours after the surgery.
