Even when life is swell, it's common for many of us to feel a nagging sensation the something is amiss. We go about our duties from day to day with an underlying malaise. Sometimes it manifests in the form of aches and pains or tension headaches, but more often, there's a pervasive sense of discontent. I believe this results from a lack of centering--of bringing the mind, body, and spirit into harmony.
Now, many people across the globe use religious or spiritual practices to attempt to maintain a balance but still don't achieve their ends. That doesn't mean their beliefs are wrong--it just means that we all can always do more. That is why I want to offer some of the best advice that helps me find my center.
First, learn to prioritize. We are all frequently overwhelmed by our many obligations and responsibilities, but getting what is truly important straight in your mind and heart can help you make stressful decisions with peace of mind.
While I make it sound simple, I know it isn't. Ideally, if you recognize that your children's needs are a higher priority than your office duties, then skipping the late-night meeting for Johnny's basketball game should be a no-brainer, but of course, you must consider the consequences when faced with such conflicts. But deciding where your values will stand when they're tested will certainly make things a little easier when it comes down to it.
Make the most of every moment you are given to yourself, with your spouse, and/or with every loved one. Love is the glue that keeps us together, and it's what makes life valuable, so look for opportunities to see the positive everywhere and in everything. Maintaining an attitude of gratitude will help you endure stressful situations and create balance in your life.
Remember to pamper yourself. While many spiritual paths encourage physical deprivation to focus on the will and the higher needs of the soul, I find that suffering in silence eventually takes its toll. Find ways to nourish body and spirit through exercise, yoga, and massage therapy. All of these healthy outlets not only provide multiple bodily benefits, they also urge you to focus on breathing and getting your mind and muscles in sync.
Regardless of your current religious or spiritual practices, don't be afraid to explore other methods to find your center. One of the primary purposes of spirituality is to assist you to balance the stresses of life and find greater fulfillment. So do what you need to in order to reach those goals.
