While these days its common knowledge that doing cardio will help you burn off extra calories, there are still many people that don't realise there are actually more effective and efficient approaches to cardio that will yield the best results in terms of burning fat.
The vast majority of people spend hours upon hour's week in and week out on a cardio machine with little to no progress; they still find themselves looking the same with very little change in their overall fitness or weight. Although they do in fact have the right idea utilising cardio to burn off extra calories they rarely do the right type of cardio at the right time of the day to achieve the best results.
Perhaps you're in the same situation, stuck in a rut working hard to reduce that tummy fat through cardio, but still after months of hard work you don't seem to notice much of a difference if any at all. This is common place amongst people looking to loose fat which is why when it comes to cardio there are two key points worth doing to ensure you're achieving the best possible results from your cardio sessions:
1. Morning cardio is often overlooked; time of the day has a big impact on the effectiveness of your cardio. By performing your cardio early the morning will provide better results than any other time of the day.
2. Utilise short high intensity sessions - very short high intensity interval training cardio, although the longer sessions will burn more calories the short high intensity intervals will have the most benefit with regards to fat loss.
Ok so with these two key points in mind let's look at morning cardio; by "first thing in the morning" it really is first thing in the morning - before you eat anything at all. Wake up have a shower, brush your teeth and hit the cardio remembering to keep it short with high intensity intervals, even if you don't have a treadmill to hop on you can still do quick high intensity intervals running on the streets.
So why is it optimal to perform morning cardio for reducing tummy fat than any other time of the day? During your sleep in the previous night, your body goes through a 8 to 10 hour fasting period where you consume no food, during this fast period, your body's glycogen stores gets depleted.
When you perform cardio exercises, glycogen is used up first before fat is mobilized as an energy source; therefore, when you perform cardio training first thing in the morning, your glycogen stores are already either depleted, or very low such that it takes very little cardio to burn off the remaining glycogen stores - at which point, your body begins to mobilize fat as a source of energy.
Makes sense doesn't it? By performing cardio in the morning where your body is in a state of low glycogen levels, you can quickly work to burn off the remaining glycogen, and effectively burn off more fat than perform
