Everyone looks forward to the warmer months of spring and summer, even pets. However, for some animals, especially those that live outside all the time, the hotter months can be dangerous times. Making sure you remain aware of how to best care for your animals during the hottest parts of the year is vital to their health and well-being. Check out summer pet care tips for keeping your pets happy during the greatest time of the year.

One parasite every dog owner needs to be aware of is heartworms. These parasites can lead to the death of a canine and indeed it is a slow and horrible death. Mosquitoes lay their larvae in the skin of your dog and they travel to the heart. Once in the heart, these parasites grow larger and larger until the heart is literally suffocated. Your vet can give you the right heartworm preventative for your dog.

Outdoor animals are at the greatest risk for heat related illness. Your outdoor pets should have clean and fresh water available at all times. In fact, changing it out twice a day is best and adding ice would be even better. Consider how you would feel out in the heat without anything to quench your thirst. Heat stroke can occur in minutes notice, so always keep a watchful eye over your outdoor pets during the hot times of the year.

Parasites like fleas and ticks are on the rise during the warmer months. These parasites can cause pets much misery and can also cause disease. Tapeworms are from fleas that are digested while an animal is biting the areas they have bitten. Ticks can cause disease like Lyme, a disease you and your family can get as well. Talk to your vet about flea and tick preventative for your pets, your home and yard.

Never leave pets in a car unattended during hot weather. This is a recipe for disaster and many animals have died due to heat stroke by being left in car, even with windows cracked. The best thing to do is avoid taking pets along with you in the hotter times of the year.

When you have outdoor cookouts and events, make sure your pets are in a safety zone. Many guests have tendencies to be too kind in giving your pets tidbits of food or drink that could be toxic. Make sure you put pets up or instruct your visitors to not feed your animals.

Fireworks displays are a big part of some summertime events. However, these can be frightening to pets that do not understand the bright light and loud noises. If you and your pet are going to be near a display of fireworks, make sure he or she is tucked away indoors in safe area. Keep an eye out for disturbing behavior, especially in older pets that can have heart troubles brought on by fear.

The time you spend with your pets in warmer months should be enjoyable. Make sure you follow the summer pets care tips that will keep your animals safe. The time you can spend together in the warm evening of this time of year can indeed make great memories. Take time to take the precautions you need for making these memories last.
