The one thing about tooth and gum pain that you can count on, is that it never strikes at convenient times. Whether you are hit in the mouth during a weekend sports game, or wake up in the middle of the night with aching gums, a dentist is not always going to be right there at your beckoned call to help.
While it is always advisable to seek the help of a dentist as soon as you can, you may need to treat your own pain symptoms temporarily to find a little bit of relief in the meantime. After all, aching and throbbing gums can keep you up all night, if you do not try to do something about it.
Knowing how to use different natural substances to bring you some relief can help you when you begin to feel pain during the night, in a business meeting, or while traveling. Whether it is an infant enduring the growth of his or her first teeth, or an adult with a rotten molar, teeth pain can make a person miserable.
Now is the time to treat it before it gets out of control. Talk to your dentist about their recommendations for the future if you can, but try some of these in the mean time.
One of the first things you can use is the cold. Most pain is due to swelling of some kind, and cold can help to relieve this discomfort.
A chilled teething ring or a frozen washcloth can help ease the pain for a teething child. Wet the washrag and stick it in the freezer, then hold it against the child's gums or allow the baby to chew it.

You can try your own analgesics, or numbing agents as well. Try taking some aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen to bring swelling down and relieve pain.
Make sure that you take them only as directed-it is a good idea to consult a doctor to make sure that it is safe for you before you take it. Never place any of these directly on the toothache or gums, as they can end up burning the tissues in your mouth.
Try gargling with a numbing agent, but do not ever swallow it. This can cause some temporary comfort, until you can seek professional help.
It is a good idea to make sure you have at least one of these substances with you when you travel, in case you cannot see a dentist right away. Try out a few different methods and see which one works best for you.
