Summer is a great time to exercise outside and to enjoy the sun. There are many different types of sports and other activities that you can participate in during the summer that are not available in the winter.

For example, it is much more likely that a group of friends will get together to play ultimate Frisbee or soccer at a local park during the good weather of the summer time. It is important to take advantage of this time of the year because exercise can provide you with many benefits that can impact your health and happiness both now and in the future.

However, there are several things that you will need to keep in mind to make sure you protect yourself from becoming overheated and from the sun. The first thing you will need to make sure you do is stay hydrated.

When it is very warm outside, your body will sweat a lot and you will lose a lot of water. You will need to make sure you drink water while you work out, afterwards, and before in order to replace the water you will lose through sweating.

As you sweat, your body will also need a replenishment of electrolytes and salt. Electrolytes and salt are also important components of sweat that will need to be replaced.

Sports drinks like Gatorade often include electrolytes and salt in their recipes, but there are other ways to replace these essential items as well. You will want to make sure that you eat the right kinds of foods that will replenish your body's stores.

Your body will not be able to function properly when it runs low on these items. When you are not hydrated, you will not be able to sweat, and your body will not be able to cool itself down.

This will result in your body overheating and a number of other negative side effects. Some of the side effects that you may experience from dehydration may include light headedness, nausea, and so forth.

If this condition is not treated soon enough, your kidneys may fail and you could even die from it. You will definitely want to avoid dying by making sure that you drink enough water.

However, you will want to replenish your water stores in proportion to electrolytes. If you only replenish your water supply, you could suffer from a condition called hyponatremia.

Hyponatremia is a condition where you may feel confused, nausea, muscle cramps, and seizures. Some people have even dies from this condition in certain extreme cases.

Hyponatremia is definitely another condition that you will want to avoid by making sure you take in enough electrolytes. Sometimes people run low on water, salt, and electrolytes without realizing it because the day deceptively appears cool due to overcast weather.

However, even if the sun is not out, you can suffer from dehydration if you are working out. You do not have to be working out under the full sun in a desert to suffer from these things.

Fortunately, there are several things you can keep in mind and do to reduce your risk for becoming dehydrated and overheating. The first thing you can do is exercise during the right times of the day.

Working out early in the morning or later at night, when it is cooler, can be much safer. Although, you will still need to make sure that you drink enough water.

The hottest part of the day is between ten in the morning and three in the afternoon. As a result, this period of time is also the most dangerous to work out in.

The second thing you will want to consider is wearing the right kind of clothing. Clothing that is loose, light colored, and light weight will allow your body to cool off much faster than if you wear heavier, darker, more dense clothing.

The light color can reflect the light and heat from the sun so that it does not contribute to your body temperature as much. In addition, the cotton material will help remove the sweat that your body produces, which will also help you stay cool.

The third thing you may want to do is wear sunscreen. It is best to wear a sunscreen with a SPF of 45 or above in order to protect your skin from the dangerous UV rays produced by the sun.

Even on overcast days, you can receive a sunburn and you will want to make sure that you are properly protected. The fourth thing you will want to do is make sure that you stay in the shade as much as possible.
