If you are interested in entering the field of dentistry, you may want to consider becoming a pro at sports dentistry. This is something for those interested in dentistry, but who want to attempt something a little more specialized.

When it comes to sports, hockey is certainly the most detrimental to player's oral health. Professional hockey organizations have several medical personnel on staff to ensure the players remain at their optimum performance level.

The medical team includes a dentist who is in attendance at every game, ready to treat players that have suffered a dental injury on the ice. These dentists are some of the most well-trained emergency oral professionals out there!

During the NHL regular season, injuries sustained during a game by either team are treated by the home team's dentist. This person must be a trained professional, ready to take on just about anything.

When the playoffs begin and the team's strategy is under lock and key, the dentist accompanies the medical team on the road to provide direct care. It is the dentist's job to keep all injuries secret so that they cannot be used against the team by their opposition.

You must learn to treat oral injuries in the middle of a game, so that you can help players to be comfortable, and continue play if possible. The coach will most likely be breathing down your neck to get that player back on the ice, so you better have some remedies ready to go.

Your priority should certainly be immediate relief of their pain. It is your job to get them out on the ice and back in play as quickly as possible.

The treatment that takes place at the game might be only a temporary fix to get them back in the game. More involved and detailed treatment will take place in the dental office after the game, or the next day.For professionals in this field, the most common injuries they see are usually lacerations, which often accompany damage to the maxillary incisors. Most players are not required to wear mouth guards during play, and the ones that do not are very susceptible to injury.

On a national level, all states generally mandate mouth guard use in high school football, ice hockey, men's lacrosse, field hockey, and amateur boxing. Different states have mandated mouth guard use for other sports.

Entering the professional realm of sporting does not necessarily mean that players forgo wearing a mouth guard because of their newfound fame. Coaches and doctors are trying to encourage players to wear their mouth pieces-the number has risen considerably, but still needs to increase in number.

The tough guy mentality has been, and always will be, part of a players strategy, but when it comes to mouth guard wear. However, this image is beginning to be modified, and there has been an increase in oral concern when it comes to hockey professionals.

However, the number of teeth lost per year by these players continues to be shockingly high, and amazing sports dentists are always in demand on the ice. Everyone knows the stereotypical hockey look, with broken and missing teeth showing when they smile.

With the help of professional dentists, this image will hopefully be modified over time, so that even hockey players can have that beautiful, protected smile. Missing teeth no longer have to be a badge of toughness and courage worn by the best players.

With fewer missing teeth and aesthetic help by sports dentists everywhere, the image of a stereotypical hockey player can be one with a healthy, beautiful mouth of pearly whites. If you are interested in this field of study, talk to a professional in this field as to how they got where they are.

Be sure to do your best in dental school, and seek out classes that could help you in emergency dental care education. If you are looking for a great few of sports games, excitement, blood, and missing teeth, becoming a sports dentist could be the perfect career path for you.
